Brewers | More on Kyle Lohse

Wed, 22 May 2013 10:17:42 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers SP Kyle Lohse (elbow) is missing his start on Saturday, May 25, because of irritation in his right elbow. He began experiencing discomfort in the joint "two or three starts ago," according to manager Ron Roenicke. Lohse is tentatively scheduled to return to the rotation for one of the team's games against the Minnesota Twins next week.

Roenicke indicated that the club's choice to skip Lohse is precautionary, because he didn't go through spring training. The manager said he hopes it's not a big deal, because Lohse didn't seem too concerned. Any time an elbow issue pops up for a pitcher, of course it'll cause worry.

Fantasy Tip: This sounds as if it will turn out to be nothing major, but fantasy owners won't get a better idea until there's an update following whatever side work Lohse does or treatment he has. Missing spring training alone isn't a reason to skip a start, so it calls into question Milwaukee's decision-making just a little. Mike Fiers, who's scheduled to take Lohse's turn on Saturday, may stick around longer if the problem is more serious than hoped.

Brewers | Kyle Lohse to miss start

Wed, 22 May 2013 08:40:03 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Kyle Lohse (elbow) has right elbow irritation and will miss his next start. P Mike Fiers will make the start.

Fantasy Tip: Hopefully, one missed start, and perhaps a cortisone injection will do the trick for Lohse. Lohse is 1-5 with a 3.76 ERA and has a string of bad luck, stemming back to his struggles with free agency. Fiers had a good stretch of starts last season and showed promise. He's worth a pickup in NL-only leagues.

Brewers | Kyle Lohse could be moved back

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 19:56:07 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers SP Kyle Lohse (finger) expects to make his next scheduled start Sunday, April 28, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, although manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday, April 23, that Lohse could be moved back another day or two if necessary. "We're still planning on (Sunday) but we can bump him back a day or two days," Roenicke said. "He's sore today, which we knew he would be. We'll see how he does and have him bat, and see what happens there."

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Lohse doesn't appear to have a serious injury, but the bad news is fantasy owners will have to play wait-and-see, and he could lose his status as a two-start pitcher in head-to-head formats this week. As such, if he is moved back a day or two, he would likely be a two-start pitcher next week to make up for it.

Brewers | Kyle Lohse dislocates finger

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 06:06:16 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Kyle Lohse (finger) dislocated his left pinkie when he made contact with a player while running to first base. X-rays were negative, and Lohse doesn't expect to miss a start.

Fantasy Tip: Lohse notched his first win with his new club after five solid innings. It was the first time he didn't throw a quality start. The injury is on his non-pitching hand, so we don't expect it to bother him too much.

Brewers | Mike Fiers makes rotation

Fri, 29 Mar 2013 16:03:53 -0700

The Milwaukee Brewers announced that SP Mike Fiers has made the rotation, and SP Chris Narveson (shoulder) will begin in the bullpen. There is concern with Narveson's surgically repaired left shoulder, although manager Ron Roenicke said he is fine. "We want to back off him a little bit," Roenicke said. "He's OK, but he's really been pushing through this thing in spring training, through the surgery. In the long run, it's probably going to help him out to limit his innings at the start." Narveson went 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA in five starts and 18 spring innings while striking out 10 and walking six. Narveson will piggyback SP Kyle Lohse in Lohse's first start of the regular season, which will likely come in the second series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers has promise even though he ran out of gas at the tail end of last season. He can neutralize left-handed sticks and is worth consideration in deep enough mixed leagues to round out your pitching staff.

Brewers | Kyle Lohse's contract breakdown

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 10:03:21 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Kyle Lohse will make $4 million this year with $7 million deferred to 2016-2018, plus $11 million in each of the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He can make an extra $1.05 million in performance bonuses; $350,000 each for the three seasons that he tops 190 innings. The team is already set in their rotation with SPs Yovani Gallardo, Marco Estrada, Wily Peralta, Chris Narveson and Mike Fiers. They may choose to carry Lohse as part of their 13-man staff to begin the year, and Lohse said he should be game-ready shortly. Fiers and Peralta have minor league options left, so they are the most likely to be bumped from the rotation to make room for Lohse when he's ready. Both young pitchers have struggled this spring, too.

Fantasy Tip: Now that Lohse has a team to pitch for, he's definitely worthy of a draft pick in all formats. He has excellent control, but isn't as dominant as 2012 suggests. He also has struggled in his career at Miller Park, confines not as friendly to hurlers as his old digs in St. Louis.
