The Associated Press is reporting free-agent P Rick Helling (Brewers) is retiring from baseball after pitching in the major leagues for 12 years, highlighted by a 20-win season. "I've said all along that I would retire if I couldn't do it anymore or if I couldn't be away from my family anymore," Helling said. "I couldn't handle being away from my family." Helling was 93-81 with a 4.68 ERA for five different teams. His best season was 1998, when he went 20-7 for the Texas Rangers.

The Associated Press reports Milwaukee Brewers SP Rick Helling allowed seven runs on six hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings on June 20 against the Detroit Tigers. It was Helling's shortest start since Sept. 23, 2000 with the Texas Rangers, when he gave up six runs to Anaheim in 1 2/3 innings.

The injury is as good as it's going to get according to head trainer Roger Caplinger. Helling said the pain did not affect him in any of his four minor league rehab starts.

The Associated Press reports Milwaukee Brewers SP Rick Helling (elbow) is scheduled to make his next rehab start on Thursday, June 15, for Triple-A Nashville before returning to Milwaukee to be examined. Helling has been on the disabled list since April 16 with a sprained right elbow.
