With Cincinnati Reds RP Kent Mercker (elbow) landing on the 15-day disabled list, RP Chris Hammond is expected to get an expanded role in the bullpen, according to the Associated Press. Hammond, who has an 8.38 ERA in 11 appearances over 9-2/3 innings, had usually faced only a few batters at a time.

Updating a previous item, Cincinnati.Reds.MLB.com reports Cincinnati Reds RP Chris Hammond (flu) took a commercial flight and met the club in Milwaukee on Thursday, April 21. Hammond, who was up all night before the April 20 game due to stomach flu, reported that he felt much better.

The Dayton Daily News reports Cincinnati Reds RP Chris Hammond (flu) was sent home following a visit to the trainer's office before the team's game on Wednesday, April 19. Asked if Hammond would be on the charter to Milwaukee for a series with the Brewers, Reds manager Jerry Narron said "If he's sick, I hope not. But I do hope he can join us in Milwaukee."

The Cincinnati Post's Marc Lancaster reports Cincinnati Reds RP Chris Hammond has had a brutal start to his 2006 season. He had a 189.00 ERA after allowing seven of eight batters faced to reach base and then seeing them all end up scoring. Also, all three inherited runners he tried to keep stranded have scored.

The Dayton Daily News' Hal McCoy reports a closer by committee approach may be used in Cincinnati. Reds MAN Jerry Narron has not indicated which pitcher will be utilized as a stopper in the ninth inning. "If Kent Mercker or David Weathers are available, they're in there," he said. "If neither are available, then it is who is available. I go right down the line from Todd Coffey to Brian Shackelford to Chris Hammond to Matt Belisle or Ryan Wagner or Mike Burns, if they are with us."
