Carroll Rogers, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Braves SP Tom Glavine (elbow) believes he needs surgery on his elbow, but hopes it will be to repair a torn flexor tendon, not a torn ligament. Glavine said if his flexor tendon needs to be repaired, he would consider pitching next season since the recovery time would be about three or four months. If he needs ligament surgery, he would not have the surgery and would retire because of the long rehab that would be needed. He has an appointment to meet with Dr. James Andrews Wednesday, Aug. 20.

He yielded seven runs on seven hits in four innings to the Chicago Cubs. He also walked four while fanning three. "I'm not discouraged," said Glavine. "I'm not happy, obviously. Your expectations are high. What I was worried about in my two rehab starts, it came to fruition. I was worried about how sharp I really was and how much I was able to do what I wanted to do."

Glavine threw approximately 40 pitches at about 60 percent effort, and said he tried all of his pitches. He plans to take several days off before throwing again.

The timetable includes total rest for the first two weeks before he begins strengthening exercises. Glavine says two MRI exams have confirmed the ligament in the elbow is strong. The problem is the flexor tendon pulling away from the bone. Glavine says he faces a possible difficult decision if he's not able to pitch by the All-Star break: Would he have surgery to give himself enough time to recover and pitch in 2009, or would he wait longer in hope of pitching later this season?
