Sun, 24 Mar 2013 19:19:05 -0700 Updating a previous report, the Colorado Rockies signed free-agent SP Jon Garland (Mariners) Sunday, March 24. Fantasy Tip: Garland is expected to be plugged into the team's rotation, but he is only worth a look in the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues or when he faces a two-start week in head-to-head formats.
Sun, 24 Mar 2013 11:46:05 -0700 Free-agent SP Jon Garland (Mariners) is at the Colorado Rockies' facility to take a physical and a signing could happen as soon as Sunday, March 24.
Sat, 23 Mar 2013 12:49:53 -0700 The Seattle Mariners have officially released SP Jon Garland.
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 20:49:43 -0700 According to a source, P Jon Garland (Mariners) does not yet have a new deal lined up, but he is opting out of his deal with the Seattle Mariners and has already drawn interest from other clubs.
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 16:46:45 -0700 The Seattle Mariners told SP Jon Garland that he's not guaranteed a spot in the starting rotation, so he has chosen to opt out of his contract. Fantasy Tip: This leaves Blake Beavan, Erasmo Ramirez, Brandon Maurer and Jeremy Bonderman in contention for the final two rotation spots. Beavan is the favorite for one of the spots because of his experience, and although Ramirez probably has the most upside, Bonderman is stating his case as a dark horse candidate.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 15:34:04 -0700 Seattle Mariners SP Jeremy Bonderman allowed just one run and five hits while striking out four in five innings against minor leaguers Wednesday, March 20, as he attempts to win a rotation spot. Bonderman will probably benefit from spending some time at Class AAA, however. SP Jon Garland has a leg up on one of the rotation spots. Fantasy Tip: Bonderman should probably be considered a long shot to start in the rotation, as he's also battling Blake Beavan, Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer. He could retire if he doesn't get the job, too.
Tue, 19 Mar 2013 16:09:12 -0700 Seattle Mariners SP Brandon Maurer is the long shot to win the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, according to The Seattle Times' Geoff Baker. SP Jon Garland can control his own destiny based on how he fares in his next spring outing. Even if Garland doesn't win a spot, Baker thinks SPs Blake Beavan and Erasmo Ramirez will get the final two spots. Maurer has been good but hasn't stood out above the other competitors. Fantasy Tip: Ramirez probably has the most upside of anyone in this competition if you're speculating on a winner in deep mixed leagues or AL-only formats. Garland is worth a dice roll in AL leagues since he has the leg up on one of the rotation spots.
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 09:56:52 -0700 Seattle Mariners SPs Brandon Maurer, Blake Beavan or Erasmo Ramirez won't be pitching out of the bullpen if they don't make the starting rotation. Maurer, Beavan and Ramirez are competing with SPs Jon Garland and Jeremy Bonderman for the final two rotation spots this spring, and the young pitchers will be sent to Triple-A Tacoma if they don't make the roster. Bonderman or Garland might also be sent down, but it's doubtful both will. With the way Garland has pitched, he's likely to crack the rotation. Maurer is going to have to be very good the rest of the spring because he's yet to pitch at Class AAA and has plenty of options left. Ramirez missed a big chunk of last year with an elbow injury and had only limited success last year. Beavan's arm is developed enough to handle a large workload, so he might be the most likely to win a rotation spot.
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 23:46:09 -0800 Seattle Mariners SP Jon Garland threw off a mound in game action for the first time in 20 months Thursday, Feb. 28, as the Mariners beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3. "It was a little weird," Garland said. "But it felt good to get out there for a true game situation. I've done my throwing and my bullpens but I have not been out there with umpires and guys in uniforms for a long time."
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 13:38:47 -0800 The Seattle Mariners won't rush SPs Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker to the starting rotation this year. SPs Erasmo Ramirez, Blake Beavan and Jon Garland probably have a leg up on a rotation spot this spring because of their experience. The team also won't rush Ps James Paxton or Brandon Maurer to the majors.
