The Associated Press reports Cleveland Indians SP C.C. Sabathia struck out 11 hitters in eight strong innings Friday, June 27. He became the first Indians pitcher since former MLB SP Chuck Finley to strike out 10 or more batters in three straight starts. He is now 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last four starts.

The Associated Press is reporting Howie Gershberg, a minor league pitching coach with the Angels since 1985, died of cancer Wednesday. He was 67. Gershberg helped develop current Anaheim pitchers Troy Percival, Jarrod Washburn, John Lackey and Francisco Rodriguez, and former Angels star Chuck Finley. KFFL extends its condolences to the Gershberg family.

Richard Justice of The Houston Chronicle reports free-agent pitcher Chuck Finley apparently has decided not to resume his career, forcing the Astros to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a veteran starting pitcher. The Astros believed they were close to signing Finley this week until they were informed by his representatives that he had changed his mind about playing.

Cardinals majority owner Bill DeWitt Jr. said Wednesday evening that the team remains hamstrung by a payroll now exceeding its $80 million ceiling. "Our objective was to carry an $80 million payroll into the season. Right now we're over that, which doesn't leave us in a position to take on more salary."
