Pirates | J.A. Happ joining rotation

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 16:22:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ will join the starting rotation with A.J. Burnett (elbow) on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) should fare slightly better in the National League, but he is still nothing more than a streaming option in the majority of seasonal leagues. FantasyScore players should be extremely cautious with starting him, too. Over 20 starts this season, Happ has a 4.64 ERA, a 4.06 FIP, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is a solid FantasyScore start opposite David Holmberg, who has been mostly overmatched in his previous two stints in the majors.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett allows 14 hits in loss

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 19:29:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett (6-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on 14 hits over 6 2/3 innings Friday, June 19, in a loss to the Washington Nationals. He walked one and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett's ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) 14 hits allowed were the most he's surrendered in a professional baseball career dating back to 1993. On a positive note, his seven strikeouts allowed him to move into 37th place on the all-time list. His next start is expected to come against the Cincinnati Reds Thursday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) continues to show why he wanted to finish his career in Pittsburgh. He is 4-1 with a 2.84 ERA in his last month, not counting Sunday's game. Keep him in your lineup.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett wins fifth straight

Thu, 28 May 2015 23:29:47 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett won his fifth straight game on Thursday, May 28, when the Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 11-5. Burnett allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out six and walked two.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has definitely found his stride in Pittsburgh, in what he says is his final year as a major league pitcher. He is definitely a must-start in FantasyScore leagues as long as Burnett keeps up this hot streak.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett struggles against SD

Wed, 27 May 2015 14:17:16 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett is just 3-7 with a 4.23 ERA in 11 career games against the San Diego Padres, who he faces Thursday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) leads the National League with a 1.37 ERA this year in nine starts. He also has a WHIP of 1.10 and 53 strikeouts in 59 innings. While Burnett is likely due for some regression this year, a matchup against the Padres at FantasyScore is attractive. The Friars rank fourth in all of baseball with 380 strikeouts as a team this year, and the start will come at pitcher-friendly Petco Park.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett leading the majors

Sat, 23 May 2015 18:12:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett improved to 4-1 on the year, allowing one run on five hits and striking out 10 in seven innings against the New York Mets Saturday, May 23, lowering his ERA to a major league-leading 1.37.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) has yet to allow more than two runs in any start this year, and he has 53 strikeouts in 59.0 innings. History says he has to slow down eventually, but Burnett is a great option at FantasyScore in the meantime. In seasonal leagues, he could be worth shopping as a sell-high candidate.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett takes down old team

Tue, 12 May 2015 21:35:52 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits over seven innings in a win against the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday, May 12. "He's throwing strikes," manager Clint Hurdle said. "No innings have gotten away from him. He mixes his pitches. And it's become very effective. He's worked hard to become a master craftsman."

Fantasy Tip: Burnett has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his seven outings this season. The reason he doesn't have more wins is due to a lack of run support. At $6,200 (or 12.4% of cap) he is a legit FantasyScore option every time out.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett to face former mates

Mon, 11 May 2015 22:48:24 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett makes his return to Philadelphia Tuesday, May 12. He had a league-leading 18 losses last season with the Philadelphia Phillies. He took more than $4 million less to sign with the Pirates, declining a $12.75 million player option for this season to stay with the Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett has pitched lights out this season for the Bucs, posting a stellar 1.66 ERA. Unfortunately, he has just one win to show for his efforts due to a lack of run support most nights. He should be amped for his start against the team he obviously wanted no part. At $6,200 (or 12.4% of cap) he is a recommended FantasyScore play.
