Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett (hernia) allowed only three hits in seven shutout innings to beat the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 17, and he struck out five in the game. Burnett received a cortisone injection Monday, April 14, for an inguinal hernia, and he plans to pitch through it the entire season.
Fantasy Tip: Burnett's outing Thursday eased some of his owner's concerns after he was diagnosed with a hernia several days ago. It won't be all smooth sailing for him this year, but this is a good sign that the injury won't impact him too much.

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett (hernia) will eventually require surgery to fix a small inguinal hernia but for now, he plans on pitching through the injury. "I'm going to have to deal with it," Burnett said. "Paying attention to it, knowing it's there, knowing what I can do to overdo it and knowing what I can do to keep it where it needs to be. I'm more of a go-getter and I'm not really a take-it-easy kind of guy, so it's going to be a test." Burnett said he can't do any further damage to himself by pitching. He has walked six batters in each of his last two starts, and the injury contributed to his erratic control.

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett (hernia) will pitch the rest of the year with a small inguinal hernia. He received a corticosteroid injection Monday, April 14, and will make his start Wednesday, April 16. "It's not a sports hernia," assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said. "It's something a lot of males have issues with. It's something you can be active with and manage. That's the plan for now." Burnett played catch Monday after having the injection.
Fantasy Tip: The key word here is that Burnett will attempt to pitch through this injury. At his age, it may prove to be too difficult, and he could wind up having surgery. Burnett admitted that his injury hurt his ability to control the baseball during his last outing.

According to Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg, SP A.J. Burnett (groin) has been battling a "little groin irritation" for the past week but he hadn't disclosed this information to coaches or members of the medical staff until the fifth inning of his start against the Miami Marlins Friday, April 11. Burnett issued six walks and threw one wild pitch before being removed and threw only 52 of 106 pitches for strikes. "He wasn't able to get full extension on his pitches," Sandberg said. "And it got to the point where it really bothered his control." Burnett will be re-evaluated Saturday, April 12, and it is too early to tell if he will make his next scheduled start against the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, April 16.

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett will actually make $15 million in base salary this season, although it will come out to $16 million if the Phillies exercise his $1 million buyout. If the option is exercised, he'll earn $15 million in 2015. If the team declines, he can trigger a $7.5 million option for 2015. His limited no-trade protection will allow the veteran to name nine teams to which can be traded. ESPN.com's Jayson Stark also reports the option for 2015 could reach $12.75 million, and Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reported Burnett could earn $1.75 million in unspecified performance bonuses each year.
