Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett allowed 12 runs on 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings in a loss Wednesday, May 2, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He entered with a 1.38 ERA, and left with a 8.04 mark. "I stunk," Burnett said. "There is nothing more I can say. I was up all night, I couldn't get anything down. It doesn't matter who you pitch against, if you get your pitches up you're going to get hammered."

The Pittsburgh Pirates gave a call to C Rod Barajas when they signed SP A.J. Burnett in the offseason. The reason: Barajas caught Burnett with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008 when he went 18-10 with a career-high 231 strikeouts. Burnett threw 70 percent of his pitches in the strike zone in his first start of the season. "We kind of go back to what he did well that year," Barajas said of looking at Burnett's years in Toronto. "It's awesome, already having that relationship built up. It should put him at ease."

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett (eye) will be activated from the disabled list in order to start against the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday, April 21. SP Kevin Correia (side), who had been scheduled to start the game, is unable to pitch because he is experiencing discomfort in his left side. Burnett went 0-3 with a 9.58 ERA and a 1.94 WHIP during his three minor league rehab starts.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett (eye) will travel home with the big club before heading back out to make one final minor-league rehab start with Double-A Altoona. Barring any setbacks, he'll be ready to return from the 15-day disabled list then. Burnett has been terrible in his three minor-league starts so far, going 0-2 with an 8.53 ERA in two starts over 6 1/3 innings with Class A Bradenton, and 0-1 with an 11.25 ERA in one start with Triple-A Indianapolis Monday, April 16.
