The Pittsburgh Pirates appear to be out of the hunt for Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett. The issue is that Burnett has been unwilling to give an assurance that he would not pick up his player option for next season, creating too much financial uncertainty for Pittsburgh.

The Kansas City Royals have looked at trading for New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon or Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett. Any deal would likely hinge on the other team picking up a substantial portion of salary.

Philadelphia Phillies SPs Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett, RP Jonathan Papelbon, and 1B Ryan Howard haven't attracted much serious interest in trade talks. Howard and Lee have almost no market, and Burnett and Papelbon's allure has been limited. The latter two have unattractive player options that are limiting interest. All four may be candidates for an August trade after the non-waiver deadline passes.
Fantasy Tip: Philly's efforts to blow things up aren't going so well, and fantasy players may have to wait a few more weeks for significant changes to happen.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have some interest in trading for Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett but are worried about him picking up his player option for 2015, which would be worth at least $7.5 million. The option could be worth as much as $12.75 million if he reaches all of his incentives.

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett worked eight scoreless innings while allowing four hits and four walks in a no-decision Wednesday, July 23, against the San Francisco Giants. He also struck out six batters while throwing 131 pitches. He moved to 48th on the all-time strikeouts list, passing former New York Mets SP Dwight Gooden.
Fantasy Tip: Burnett is a trade target for plenty of contenders down the stretch, and his fantasy prospects could be about to improve dramatically, depending on where he lands. If he pitches like he did Wednesday, it won't matter where he is.

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett would not block a trade to nine teams in Major League Baseball. An earlier post indicated he would be open to a return to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the other eight teams are the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals.

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett prefers the Pittsburgh Pirates as his next team, and Pittsburgh players are lobbying for his return. The player option on his deal may wind up being a road block to a trade, though.
Fantasy Tip: Pittsburgh's pitchers typically are more successful than most clubs', and they helped turn around Burnett's career in 2012. A reunion would be a boon for Burnett's fantasy worth.
