ESPNews reports former MLB SP John Burkett has retired after 15 seasons. Burkett finishes his career with a 166-136 record, pitching with the San Francisco Giants, Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.

The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes reports the New York Yankees contacted free-agent SP John Burkett (Red Sox). Burkett, 39, wants to return in 2004 but believes his career may be over. Burkett last pitched in Game 6 of the ALCS versus the Yankees. "If that was my last game, it's pretty cool that they gave me the ball in an elimination game," said Burkett. "But now I can't get a job? How do you explain that?"

Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal reports Boston Red Sox P John Burkett is having second thoughts about retiring at the end of the season. "This year, I wanted to make good on the ($5.5 million) contract the Red Sox gave me," Burkett said, "because it's the best contract I've ever had as a player. I was focused on playing it out. We'll see how I feel.

The AP reports Boston Red Sox pitcher John Burkett has allowed 15 runs in his first inning over his last seven appearances. On Sunday, Burkett allowed four runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings, just the third loss for a Boston starter in 18 decisions since June 4.
