The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes reports the New York Yankees contacted free-agent SP John Burkett (Red Sox). Burkett, 39, wants to return in 2004 but believes his career may be over. Burkett last pitched in Game 6 of the ALCS versus the Yankees. "If that was my last game, it's pretty cool that they gave me the ball in an elimination game," said Burkett. "But now I can't get a job? How do you explain that?"

"This year, I wanted to make good on the ($5.5 million) contract the Red Sox gave me," Burkett said, "because it's the best contract I've ever had as a player. I was focused on playing it out.
