San Diego Padres SP Jake Peavy struck out 11 Pittsburgh Pirates, Saturday, Sept. 23, according to Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press. He matched the franchise record for most double-digit strikeout games in a career, with 15, tying Andy Benes. It was the fifth time this season Peavy has struck out at least 10 batters in a game.

The Chicago Sun-Times' Mike Kiley writes Chicago Cubs pitcher Alan Benes has a new split-finger pitch his brother, former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes, helped him develop in the offseason. Benes, a longshot to make the rotation, went 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA last season in Chicago.
