The Washington Nationals designated OF Brett Carroll for assignment Friday, April 13. The move makes room for the return of OF Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, April 14.

Washington Nationals OF Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) will be activated from the disabled list Saturday, April 14, where he will become the starting center fielder over OF Roger Bernadina. "He's in great shape," manager Davey Johnson said. "He had a great rehab program. Did awfully well. He's still fine. He had a great workout with the boys. He looks good to go." OFs Steve Lombardozzi and Brett Carroll are candidates to be sent down. Johnson plans to play Ankiel on an everyday basis. It's unlikely that OF Mark DeRosa will play much at first base with Bernadina moving to left field.

Washington Nationals OF Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) will play what is expected to be his final rehab game at Triple-A Syracuse Thursday, April 12. If all goes well, he'll return Saturday, April 14.

Washington Nationals OFs Mike Morse (lat) and Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) will play for Single-A Hagerstown Monday, April 9. Morse has yet to play in nine innings, which is a requirement before he's activated from the disabled list. Morse can return Tuesday, April 10, while Ankiel is eligible to return Saturday, April 14. Morse has gone 3-for-8 with a walk, homer and double in three rehab games. Ankiel is 3-for-9 with two walks and two homers.
