The Associated Press reports former big league P Wilson Alvarez will serve as the pitching coach with Class-A State College in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

Chicago White Sox SP Jose Contreras won his team-record 16th consecutive decision, Friday, June 23, against the Houston Astros, according to the Associated Press. Contreras has not lost since Aug. 21, 2005, against the Minnesota Twins, in a streak that covers his last 21 regular-season starts. He took sole possession of the club's consecutive wins streak previously shared by P LaMarr Hoyt and P Wilson Alvarez, and it is the majors' longest streak since the Twins' Johan Santana won 17 consecutive decisions from July 2004 to April 2005. Contreras improved his record to 8-0 on the season.

Scott Merkin, of WhiteSox.MLB.com, reports Chicago White Sox SP Freddy Garcia earned the win Saturday, April 22, giving him 102 wins for his career. He is now tied with retired SP Wilson Alvarez, who was also a member of the White Sox at one time. Garcia pitched six and two-thirds innings and struck out three while allowing seven hits, including a home run to Minnesota Twins OF Torii Hunter.

Updating previous items, The Orange County Register's Dan Wood reports Los Angeles Dodgers RP Wilson Alvarez (shoulder) threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session Monday, Sept. 5. The team is hopeful Alvarez can make it back to pitch in a game at least once before retiring at the end of the season.
