Former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he has reached out to Hall of Fame SS Ozzie Smith to try to mend the fences after Smith felt jettisoned for SS Royce Clayton during the 1996 season. "The only uncomfortable part of my 16 years with the Cardinals is my relationship with Ozzie," La Russa said. "I've reached out. But, nothing yet."

La Russa met with Cohen, according to two people familiar with the sale process but not authorized to comment. The two men discussed how La Russa might fit with the Dodgers, the people said, but no agreement was reached and La Russa has made no commitment.

Retired manager Tony La Russa will assist at Detroit Tigers camp in an unofficial capacity this spring. "Tony's going to be down for a couple weeks," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He's going to work with Dave (Dombrowski) in the front office, and he's going over to Jupiter for a few days and then go out to Arizona for a few days. He will not be in uniform."
