The Seattle Mariners are beginning to interview candidates to replace Chuck Armstrong as team president, and former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is thought to be on a list of external candidates. Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln would neither confirm nor deny La Russa's candidacy, but Lincoln divulged that the interview process began this week with two candidates within the Mariners' organization.

Former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he has reached out to Hall of Fame SS Ozzie Smith to try to mend the fences after Smith felt jettisoned for SS Royce Clayton during the 1996 season. "The only uncomfortable part of my 16 years with the Cardinals is my relationship with Ozzie," La Russa said. "I've reached out. But, nothing yet."

La Russa met with Cohen, according to two people familiar with the sale process but not authorized to comment. The two men discussed how La Russa might fit with the Dodgers, the people said, but no agreement was reached and La Russa has made no commitment.
