"First of all, (general manager) Brian Sabean and I have been friends for a long time," Piniella said. "But more important than that, I get a chance to just do baseball and at the same time be able to come home just about every night and I'll be able to get out of the house every night." Piniella turned down an offer to do television work and job offers from several other teams to join the Giants organization.

"I need to be home," Piniella said. "My circumstances have changed a heck of a lot the last year, especially the last month or so. I just need to be home. I'm concerned about my mom. I love baseball but I love my family. When you talk about your family, it's a little more important than baseball, it's a lot more important." The 66-year-old Piniella missed four games earlier this month to visit his ailing mother in Florida and had initially planned to step down at the end of the season. Third base coach Mike Quade will serve as the interim manager.
