Former Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said he'd like to return to managing in the major leagues again. Baker was fired by the Reds last October. He contacted several teams this winter with vacant managerial positions, including the Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers, but never heard back.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty brought manager Dusty Baker in for a end-of-the-season meeting and wanted to fire hitting coach Brook Jacoby. Baker said: "If you want to fire someone, fire me." Jocketty opted to fire Baker, and a source said the two's relationship had been strained or distant of late. Baker has no plans to retire.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker has put his health issues behind him. He suffered a minor stroke and irregular heartbeat in September. He lost 20 pounds during the 11 days he was absent from the team, and he has kept the weight off. "I'm just watching what I eat," Baker said Tuesday, Feb. 12. "I can eat what I want, but eat less of it. No salt, which I've been on a long time. (I've had) minimal alcohol intake. It was easy this winter, but we hadn't lost a couple of games. I have to make sure I get my rest, work out, enjoy life and try not to stress out."

"There was no breakdown," Jocketty said. "You just don't work out a contract in a few hours. These things take time." Jocketty wouldn't say whether the Reds had offered Baker a contract.
