The Miami Marlins aren't necessarily looking for a candidate with tons of managerial experience to replace manager Ozzie Guillen. Former 3B Mike Lowell and OF Jeff Conine have been mentioned, along with Toronto Blue Jays Class A skipper Mike Redmond. The Marlins will need permission to speak with Redmond, but it isn't believed to be an issue. Miami will not consider former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine.

Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo is a strong candidate to join the Boston Red Sox, perhaps as bench coach. Lovullo managed Triple-A Pawtucket in 2010 before joining new manager John Farrell in Toronto. He was one of the candidates the Red Sox interviewed last year before they hired Bobby Valentine.

The Boston Red Sox plan to fire manager Bobby Valentine after their season ends Wednesday, Oct. 3, according to people familiar with the situation. It's believed the move will come Thursday, Oct. 4, or Friday, Oct. 5. Valentine thinks bench coach Tim Bogar has been working against him this year.

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington alluded to the possibility that manager Bobby Valentine will be fired at the end of the season. "I'd always rather get the decision right rather than rush it," Cherington said. "But I think that what we know we need to do is hit the ground running in this offseason. One of the things, as I look back at last offseason, that didn't go perfectly was simply the amount of time that we spent on the manager search and what that did to the rest of the offseason. I would like to spend less time on it this offseason, that's for sure."
