Twins | Injury updates to come from GM this season

Sun, 19 Feb 2012 21:41:46 -0800

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan or assistant general manager Rob Antony will provide injury updates this season instead of manager Ron Gardenhire, per a new team policy this season. Last year, head trainer Rick McWane gave daily injury updates before regular season games. "There are a few reasons (for the change), but No. 1, that's the way I've always done it," Ryan said. "Two, I'd just as soon have Gardy manage the ballclub and not worry about giving his medical (report) every day. Three, Rob and I will be on almost every trip and certainly at home we'll do it. Four, I don't want any confusion in communication description and that's the reasons."

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire disagrees with Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane's opinion to avoid collisions at home plate. The two were teammates in the minors. "I don't think you can tell an athlete to back away from a play at home plate if it's winning or losing the ballgame," Gardenhire said. "Tell him, 'I don't want you to take the hit. Let the ball go to the backstop?' Ain't going to happen."

Twins | Denard Span to see more off days

Mon, 31 Jan 2011 01:00:03 -0800

Minnesota Twins OF Denard Span will get more time off this season, according to MLB.com's Kelly Thesier. Span played in 62 straight games before taking a day off last year, and manager Ron Gardenhire hopes to change that. "I think he wore down at the end of the season. He had a lot of at-bats. He takes a lot of pitches, does a lot of things for his teammates and puts himself in a hole to make sure that they see pitches. He does his job. Now, it's my job to make sure I rest him a little bit more, and give him the breaks he needs to get the best out of him," Gardenhire said.
