DE Chike Okeafor and S Robert Griffith, who offer versatility to the team's defense this year. "You're not just pigeon-holed to be one particular thing," Pendergast said. "Guys can have two or three different roles and fit in two or three different spots, which obviously makes it much more competitive. We're trying to be a diverse defense that plays with a lot of speed and a lot of different personnel groups and they (new players) lend us a hand in that situation."

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns S Robert Griffith is contemplating whether he would like to return for his final year of his contract. "It's my 12th season coming up, and I want to win," Griffith said. "I can't be in a situation where I'm rebuilding. I need to go to a team that's going to win, and if they're not going to win, [at least] it's a veteran team. I'm 34 years old." Griffith explained that he loves playing for Browns owner Randy Lerner. "I love the guy," Griffith said. "He's straightforward, no-nonsense and I'd love to play for him. But at this point in my career, it's all about winning." Griffith is scheduled to earn $1 million next year and is owed a roster bonus in March.

The 2002 Browns season ended with Griffith defending Fazio after the coach left the team on Jan. 7, two days after a 36-33 playoff loss to Pittsburgh. Griffith said Fazio didn't get a chance to call the end of the game the way he would have liked, as Cleveland allowed two late touchdown drives. "It was the heat of the moment, and I was frustrated with the way we lost the game," said Griffith.
