Cardinals | Arrington currently No. 2 RB; situation could change

Wed, 09 Aug 2006 19:42:20 -0700

Matt Simpson, of the East Valley Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals RB J.J. Arrington has drawn praise from head coach Dennis Green in his second pro camp and is listed as RB Edgerrin James' backup heading into Saturday's preseason opener, Aug. 12, against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Green has said he won't make a decision who is officially No. 2 until the end of the preseason. Arrington has to beat out RB Marcel Shipp to win the job. Finding playing time for Shipp and Arrington, both of whom are expected to contribute on special teams, is made even more difficult by James' versatility. While many starting backs are replaced by a better receiver on third downs or a bigger back in short-yardage situations, James is probably the team's best option in all situations. That could make offensive snaps hard to come by for Shipp and Arrington.

Cardinals | Arrington ready to accept backup role

Thu, 01 Jun 2006 19:09:34 -0700

Darren Urban, of the East Valley Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals RB J.J. Arrington is ready to accept his new role as backup running back to starting RB Edgerrin James. "I will just try and get in and help where I can," Arrington said following Wednesday's workout, May 31. "If Edge needs a break here and there, I can do that. I'll be catching out of the backfield, mostly." There were questions with how hard Arrington ran when he was in the game last season. While he acknowledged getting more repetitions in practice this week as a first-teamer while James is away can only help, "I also would love for (James) to be here so I can continue to learn from him." Vice president of football operations Rod Graves said having Arrington and RB Marcel Shipp behind James isn't a luxury as much as a necessity.
