Pirates | Vowing to improve success at steals

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle is making it a project in the offseason to improve his team's success at basestealing. In 2009, the Pirates' 74 percent stolen-base success rate was second-best in the National League. That number has tumbled in each of the past three seasons to the point in 2012 where it was at 58 percent, the worst in the majors in a season where the average success rate was 75 percent, the highest since 2007.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle is not worried about 3B Pedro Alvarez, although he has struggled in the lineup this spring. "Pedro doesn't exactly look uncomfortable, he's just still looking for his timing off live pitching," Hurdle said. "We'll keep giving him at-bats, and the comfort and confidence will come. So many are going through the same thing. It happens."

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Pedro Alvarez is expected to re-join the major league team once the season ends for Triple-A Indianapolis. Manager Clint Hurdle said Alvarez will not be entitled to a majority of the starts at third base when he does return.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said he will begin talking with team management about what the team may consider needs and what they could trade for before the trade deadline. "We're just trying to be smart with the moves we make," Hurdle said. "We want to make sure we bring in a good skill-set that fits in the clubhouse as well." Hurdle said some of the players that will be coming off the disabled list could improve the team which would allow them not to look for help outside the organization.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle decided to use RP Tim Wood during the ninth inning of a game against the Washington Nationals Friday, July 1, because he felt that RPs Chris Resop and Jose Veras needed a break. "Resop and Veras have been in 40 games," he said. "They can't pitch every night. I've got to have other guys contribute. Also, I felt he could get them out. You've got to pick your poison on where you want to go from there." Wood (0-3), who has only thrown 7 2/3 innings this season, allowed one run on two hits and a walk over one-third of an inning and was tagged with the loss Friday.
