"It wasn't like his command was great," Manuel said. "What happened was, he had stuff. He was up and down, and he might just have been wild enough to be effective. But now his fastball is definitely good enough. He surprised me with his fastball. I didn't realize he could throw that hard. I saw his slider in spring training. He's got a good slider, and he's got a good change-up." The Phillies aren't sure what Bastardo's role will be in the future, though they haven't ruled him out as a reliever. Pitching coach Rich Dubee said Bastardo's 95 mph fastball and effective slider could make him an effective reliever.

Myers muttered a few expletives at Manuel when he went to the mound to remove him from the game, with two outs in the eighth inning. Manuel went after Myers in the dugout shortly thereafter, and the two exchanged words nose-to-nose. "I wanted to stay in," Myers said. "I'm a competitor. That's what I do. Sometimes your emotions get the best of you and you do something irrational. I should've respected his decision. It's patched up. We're buddies." Manuel said he prefers when a pitcher doesn't want to leave the game. "It was two strong-willed people kind of disagreeing," Manuel said. "Everything is all right. He wanted to stay in. I like that. In fact, if he doesn't want to stay in, I'd be mad."

"I'll think about what I want to do the next few days and we'll come up with something. We don't have a lot of options." Dubee said Myers' struggles were a combination of mental approach and mechanical problems. Because of an off day Monday, June 30, the team could skip his next turn in the rotation Thursday, July 3, against the Atlanta Braves, or they could move RP Chad Durbin into the rotation, while moving Myers to the bullpen. However, a move does not need to be made before Tuesday, July 1.

Garcia had allowed a leadoff single to Milwaukee Brewers SS J.J. Hardy and a walk to 1B Prince Fielder before retiring the next two batters. Garcia then walked OF Gabe Gross, who had hit two home runs already, to load the bases, prompting another trip to the mound for Manuel. After the game Garcia was asked about the situation and he had this to say, "Let me pitch. That's all I need to do. Let me pitch. When I get in trouble, let me do my thing and try to get out of the inning." Manuel was not around to address Garcia's concerns.

ESPN.com reports Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was involved in a verbal confrontation with a member of the Philadelphia media Tuesday, April 17, after the team's 8-1 loss to the New York Mets. Manuel engaged in an argument with WIP-AM talk show host Howard Eskin, who has long been critical of Manuel, during the postgame press conference. Manuel then went on a profanity-laced tirade in his office and challenged Eskin to a fight. According to the report, Manuel had to be restrained from going after Eskin in the team's clubhouse.
