Washington Nationals director of player development Andy Dunn has resigned, according to the Associated Press. Assistant general manager Bob Boone, along with other members of the team's baseball operations staff, will take over Dunn's role for the time being.

MLB | Ray Boone Dies

The Associated Press reports former major leaguer Ray Boone died at the age of 81 early Sunday, Oct. 17, following a long illness. Boone, who played from 1948-60 with six teams, was the first of three generations to play in the big leagues. His son Bob Boone and grandsons Bret Boone and Aaron Boone enabled the family to become the first three-generation family in major league baseball. Prior to his passing, Boone had been hospitalized for six months due to complications from surgery. KFFL offers our condolences.

Hal McCoy of The Dayton Daily News reports with Cincinnati Reds second baseman Juan Castro on a 2-for-23 slide, manager Bob Boone benched him Wednesday night and inserted Ryan Freel at second base. Asked if it was because Castro wasn't hitting, Boone smiled and said, "Along without about everybody else."

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports pitcher Jamey Wright, the 28-year-old right-hander released by the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, sounds like a possible Cincinnati Reds reclamation project. "I've always wanted to see what would happen if (pitching coach Don Gullett) got a hold of him and straightened him out," Reds manager Bob Boone said.

He is more likely to return Tuesday when the Reds open a six-game trip to Colorado and San Francisco. "He has to be able to run the bases at a full sprint," Manager Bob Boone said.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Ken Griffey Jr. (shoulder), sidelined by a dislocated right shoulder, continues to work on his range of motion and strength. The original diagnosis had Griffey out six to 10 weeks, but he could be back much sooner. "The prognosis is encouraging," Reds manager Bob Boone said. "Every day there's progress. I think it will be shorter than longer."
