The team also talked with former manager Jerry Manuel, former Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin, Diamondbacks first base coach Eric Young and Texas Rangers minor league manager Steve Buechele.

Former manager Jerry Manuel and former Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin are no longer in the running.

ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin reports that the Mets have asked Minaya to stay on in some other capacity, and Minaya has some interest but is uncertain about what he wants to do. The official announcement will likely be made before the start of the playoffs Wednesday, Oct. 6. The team is planning to go outside the organization for a general manager candidate and are thought to be considering former general manager Josh Byrnes, Chicago White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn and former general manager Sandy Alderson. Minor league manager Wally Backman has been mentioned as an in-house candidate for the managerial position. Former manager Bobby Valentine is also expected to be discussed.
