The Colorado Rockies are close to naming their next manager Tuesday, Nov. 6, with bench coach Tom Runnells, 1B Jason Giambi, former SS Walt Weiss and Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams the leading candidates for the job. The team also talked with former manager Jerry Manuel, former Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin, Diamondbacks first base coach Eric Young and Texas Rangers minor league manager Steve Buechele.

Bench coach Tom Runnells also remains a candidate, even though he won't interview this week. New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya has been relieved of his duties - the club has declined to renew his option - and manager Jerry Manuel has been let go, reports ESPN. ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin reports that the Mets have asked Minaya to stay on in some other capacity, and Minaya has some interest but is uncertain about what he wants to do.

Manuel is the subject of speculation that he will be fired.

The New York Mets are expected to announce shortly after the season that manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya will not return for the 2011 season, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. The official announcement will likely be made before the start of the playoffs Wednesday, Oct. 6. The team is planning to go outside the organization for a general manager candidate and are thought to be considering former general manager Josh Byrnes, Chicago White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn and former general manager Sandy Alderson. Minor league manager Wally Backman has been mentioned as an in-house candidate for the managerial position. Former manager Bobby Valentine is also expected to be discussed.

"I am closing the door on managing the Mets and probably everybody else," Torre said. "The only thing I'm trying to do is that I don't want to mislead anybody. My intention is that when I finish here as a manager a week from Sunday, I am anticipating that will be my last game as a manager." Current manager Jerry Manuel felt disrespected when Torre originally expressed interest in the job.
