According to the Plain Dealer, Cleveland Browns S Earl Little, who started 16 games last season at strong safety, will now compete with Devin Bush for the starting free safety job in training camp. Newly signed SS Robert Griffith is expected to start at strong safety. "Earl had a good year," coach Butch Davis said. "I just believe that great football teams are all built on competition. If you've only got one good player at each position, you don't have a real good team."

The Miami Herald reports agent Drew Rosenhaus, representing S Daryl Porter recently released by the Miami Dolphins, said he may make a stop in Cleveland on his tour of teams to visit if he does not re-sign in Miami. The Post-Dispatch reports St. Louis Rams S Kim Herring is hopeful of practicing again in a week although the team's projection is he will miss two to three weeks with his hamstring injury. Coach Mike Martz said S Rich Coady, will be back sooner. Coady also strained his left hamstring Sunday afternoon. His injury is less severe, and Martz figures he'll be back in action within a week or two. While those two are injured, Devin Bush will work out with the first team defense at free safety.

SportsLine.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the St. Louis Rams have reworked the contract of S Devin Bush. Bush has agreed to reduce his base salary this year from $1.95 million to $500,000. He'll still receive an off-season workout bonus of $50,000 and the Rams have given him a $100,000 roster bonus that will be paid on the first day of training camp. The Rams have saved $1.35 million under the salary cap this year. Next season, Bush agreed to have his base salary reduced to $500,000. He was scheduled to earn $2.05 million. However, that doesn't assure him a roster spot next year as he has a roster bonus of $1.6 million due in March so the team may ask him to restructure again next year or simply cut him.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, as an update to previous stories, reports St. Louis Rams LB Todd Collins will be a salary cap casualty later this summer. There continues to be speculation that S Devin Bush may also be let go. The team continues to have interest in trading DE Kevin Carter, who is the team's franchise player, and the Tennessee Titans appear to have some interest in him. In other news, by releasing S Keith Lyle yesterday the team saved $1.575 million under the salary cap.

The Arizona Republic reports Arizona Cardinals restricted free agent S Pat Tillman visited the St. Louis Rams on Monday. If he were to sign an offer sheet, the Cardinals would have seven days to match or receive a seventh-round draft pick as compensation. The Rams don't have a seventh rounder this year, so they may have to part with a sixth round pick. The Rams still have Devin Bush and Rich Coady as their safeties, but they could be looking for someone cheaper than Bush ($2.4 million cap hit for 2001) and more experienced than Coady.

Agent Scott Hefland said his partner talked to the Rams two weeks ago. Jim Thomas of the Post Dispatch reports for the Sporting News the St. Louis Rams naming of DE Kevin Carter as their franchise player will put them about $500,000 over the salary cap. The team needs to cut or restructure a few players to have enough cap space to tender their restricted free agents including LB London Fletcher, WR Az-Zahir Hakim and TE Roland Williams. Cutting DL Ray Agnew, LB Todd Collins and DT D'Marco Farr would save about $4.5 million of cap space and they are three prime candidates to be released. S Devin Bush may be restructured and OC Steve Everitt may be released.

There had been concern during free agency about Toby's recovery from his knee injury. Melissa Isaacson reports in the Chicago Tribune the Bears are planning to have visits from Free Agents S Devin Bush of the Falcons, DE Clyde Simmons of the Bengals and DE Chad Bratzke of the Giants sometime next week. Bratzke also plans to visit the Colts, Browns and Titans.
