Former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly has left the Chicago Cubs broadcast booth after eight seasons to pursue a job with another team. Speculation is he may end up back with the Diamondbacks, this time as a broadcaster.

Updating previous reports, Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin shot down a report that the Brewers were close to hiring Chicago Cubs announcer Bob Brenly as their new manager, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports. "Unless someone else is doing the hiring, that's not true," Melvin said.

Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said the team will begin its search for their next manager this month, according to ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine. The team plans on interviewing more than 15 candidates for the job. Former 2B Ryne Sandberg, Washington Nationals third base coach Pat Listach, former manager Fredi Gonzalez and New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi are all expected to receive invitations to be interviewed. Other candidates could include former manager Bob Brenly, former manager Bobby Valentine and San Diego Padres bench coach Ted Simmons.

The Chicago Tribune reports free-agent manager Bob Brenly said he has had discussions with at least one general manager about a managing job with an undisclosed team. He said he had informal talks with Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo. Brenly has been interviewed by the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers in the last few offseasons.

Cubs announcer Bob Brenly said during the WGN telecast that it was Zambrano's 13th career homer, which ties him with SP Ferguson Jenkins for the team record for a pitcher.
