Updating a previous story, MiamiDolphins.com reports Miami Dolphins SS Chris Akins (knee) underwent successful knee surgery Wednesday, Aug. 11. The surgery was performed by University of Miami team physician Dr. John Uribe at Baptist Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables. Akins will not play this season.

Harvey Fialkov, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong said the team is shorthanded on special teams with the season-ending injury to S Chris Akins (knee) and the likely possibility that S Shawn Wooden (back) will undergo season-ending back surgery. "Those were the two best guys I had," Armstrong said of Akins and Wooden. "When guys like that are out, obviously, somebody has got to step up. Hopefully, somebody will come through in the next four games and we've got to obviously look on the market and see what's available."

Harvey Fialkov, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins S Chris Akins (knee) will miss the entire 2004 season with a knee injury suffered during a scrimmage with the Houston Texans Saturday, Aug. 7. In a released statement Akins said, "my leg got rolled over when an offensive lineman tried to make a block, and that was about it." Akins had joined the Dolphins earlier this offseason via free agency.

Patriots CB Ty Law (normally No. 24) had switched jerseys with DB Antwan Harris (23), SS Rodney Harrison (37) wore S Chris Akins' (34) and CB Asante Samuel (22) had on S Eugene Wilson's (26). The Associated Press reports after the surprising release of SS Lawyer Milloy, the effort to fill the gap intensified on Wednesday, Sept. 3 in the New England Patriots' second practice without him. Patriots Ss Antwan Harris, Chris Akins, Aric Morris and Je'Rod Cherry all could take Milloy's spot, although Patriots head coach Bill Belichick didn't say who would start for the Sunday, Sept. 7 season opener against the Buffalo Bills. ''I think Chris and Antwan will probably get a good number of snaps this week, but Aric will also get some work there,'' Belichick said.

According to the Ap, Cleveland Browns S Chris Akins was in the hospital after a one-car accident Friday night. A hospital spokeswoman declined to comment on his condition. Browns spokesperson Todd Stewart said he didn't have any information on Akins' condition. A policeman said he didn't believe alcohol was involved or that Akins hit another vehicle.

He still isn’t fully recovered from a broken foot he sustained in Week 1 while playing for the St. Louis Rams. He took a lot of snaps with the first team because starting S Bhawoh Jue (groin) missed practice. The team remains disappointed with S Chris Akins. He had two more costly penalties Monday night. "He’s a very aggressive player that has to play more disciplined," Coach Mike Sherman said. “That’s something that’s being addressed, I promise you.” Bowen's health could eventually impact Akins' job status with the team.

Michael Cunningham reports for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Green Bay Packers S Chris Akins has apparently kept his job, but he did receive a hefty fine from the team. Two team sources confirmed Monday that coach Mike Sherman fined Akins $21,611, or 1/18th of his base pay, for his sideline blow-up at Sherman yesterday. Sherman said Akins' playing status for Thursday is undetermined at this time. Early indications are that he will dress.

The Associated Press reports after Green Bay Packers starting S LeRoy Butler broke his shoulder today, he was replaced by backup S Chris Akins. Akins was benched early in the fourth quarter when he committed a 15-yard personal foul on a drive that led to Atlanta's decisive touchdown. Akins was upset as he was pulled from the game and he got into an animated discussion with coach Mike Sherman on the sidelines. "He was still emotional from the play that just occurred, I'm sure," said Sherman. Sherman said he benched Akins for slamming his helmet. Akins was replaced by rookie S Bhawoh Jue. After the game Akins was contrite for his actions.

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bears special teams ace/S Larry Whigham was ejected from today's game for throwing a punch at Packers S Chris Akins. The two were tangled on the play, and after knocking Whigham down, Akins appeared to throw a couple of punches. Whigham took exception and came up and gave Akins a shot.

The Press Gazette reports Green Bay Packers LT Chad Clifton having aggravated a hamstring pull during yesterday's game. Clifton did not finish the game and was replaced by Barry Stokes for the final drive. Clifton's status for next Sunday’s game won't be known until at least today. DE Vonnie Holliday (strained groin) and backup RB Rondell Mealey (concussion) will be further evaluated today. S Chris Akins had the wind knocked out of him, LB Nate Wayne limped off and DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila aggravated his neck stinger. All returned for the second half of yesterday's game.
