Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reporting for the Sporting News, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers will bring P Mike Barr to training camp for the fourth consecutive year as a possible replacement for P Chris Gardocki, who has not yet been released. Barr has a strong leg and almost beat out Gardocki this past year.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said the team is in good enough salary cap shape that he will not have to consider it when he makes his cuts. The extra salary cap space could help keep P Chris Gardocki on the roster. There was talk that the Steelers would keep P Mike Barr over Gardocki because he was younger and cheaper.

Alan Robinson, of the Associated Press, reports Pittsburgh Steelers P Mike Barr is feels confident in his game and believes he could become the team's punter for 2006. Barr is competing with veteran P Chris Gardocki, who has never had a punt blocked in 1,112 attempts. However, Gardocki carries a cap vale of $1.3 million for the season. Barr said, "I've had situational punts, I've gotten the team out of trouble, I've pinned teams down deep inside 10. I've handled every situational punt well. I've got a lot of confidence in myself in those kicks, and I've got a lot of reps doing it."

P Chris Gardocki is entering his 16th NFL season and is scheduled to make $1.088 million with a cap value of $1.3 million. He also ranked 23rd in the NFL in gross punting average and 29th in net average, but the team likes how fast he gets the ball off. Gardocki has never had a punt blocked in 1,112 career attempts, an NFL record.

The Associated Press reports Pittsburgh Steelers P Chris Gardocki almost had a punt blocked for the first time in his long NFL career. Gardocki's fourth attempt of the day was deflected partially by Jacksonville Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis. Under NFL statistical policy, the kick is not officially a block because it gained positive yardage.

Pittsburgh Steelers P Chris Gardocki has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 11. Gardocki punted seven times against the Cincinnati Bengals, placing five of his kicks inside the 20-yard line, and three kicks inside the 10-yard line.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers PK Jeff Reed (hip) ended a four-month layoff after hip surgery when he kicked a football for the first time last week. On Monday, May 24, Reed kicked for the first time with P Chris Gardocki, who will serve as his new holder. "He hit the ball well today," said Steelers special teams coach Kevin Spencer. "I was really happy with it. He hit from 52, which is really good. The ball's popping off his foot like it always does. I feel pretty good about it right now."

Cleveland Browns P Chris Gardocki will be closely watched in the Sunday, Nov. 9, game against the Kansas City Chiefs, since he'll be punting to Chiefs WR/KR Dante Hall, who has four return touchdowns this season. It appears that the Browns will kick to Hall because head coach Butch Davis said he has emphasized to Gardocki the need for hang-time as opposed to distance on punts.
