Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith indicated the team will pursue a backup quarterback during the offseason. QB Nathan Enderle is the only other quarterback under contract besides starter QB Jay Cutler. "We have a lot of options out there. I think this is an attractive place for a quarterback," Smith said. "We're going to look at all people. And I'm talking about (QB Caleb Hanie), (QB Josh McCown) and free agent quarterbacks out there. I just feel like we'll be able to strengthen that position more than we were this past year."

Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown has done enough since signing a one-year contract last week to be part of the team's offseason conversation. The team gained a season-high 441 yards in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers. "I think everything you do, you have to look at the performance and the performance Josh put in (Sunday night) was impressive," head coach Lovie Smith said. "That's why we can get so much done this week. We want to see him have an opportunity to come back and play again this coming week. You normally can find a spot for a player that played the way he played (Sunday night)."

Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown completed 19 of 28 passes for 242 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 16 game against the Green Bay Packers. McCown also racked up 38 yards on eight rushes, and he made a nice hustling play to recover a fumble by RB Kahlil Bell in the second half.

Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown, named the Week 16 starter Wednesday, Dec. 21, might have a chance to get offered a contract for 2012 if he shows well in the final two games. That would bring him into the offseason program and have him go to training camp with the team in July. "If I keep looking back and saying, 'I only got here six weeks ago,' then it becomes an excuse (and) I think you leave an area for you not to play well because you're leaving something to fall back on," McCown said.

Free-agent QB Kyle Orton (Broncos), who was waived by the Denver Broncos Tuesday, Nov. 22, would like a chance to return to the Chicago Bears after QB Jay Cutler (thumb) broke his thumb in Week 11. Orton and his agent, David Dunn, initiated talks for the Broncos to release him after they found out that Cutler may miss the rest of the season. The Bears and/or the Kansas City Chiefs will put in waiver claims on Orton. The Chiefs have first priority because they have an inferior record. The Bears could turn to free-agent QBs Josh McCown (49ers) or J.T. O'Sullivan (Raiders) if they lose out on Orton. There are indications that Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz isn't very comfortable with QB Caleb Hanie for the rest of the season.

McCown said, "I understand right now there's not anybody beating down my door to be a starter. So understanding that, where do you go to be in a great situation where you are a backup? For me, in (offensive coordinator) Mike Martz's offense and where I'm at in my career, I feel comfortable with (coming to Chicago). The fact that Jay (Cutler) is there doesn't affect me at all, and probably gets me more excited because you get to work with a guy that talented, and hopefully help the coaches get the best out of him."

QB Jake Delhomme was 7-for-17 for 73 yards with four interceptions and a lost fumble. Delhomme was replaced by QB Josh McCown (knee), who went 1-for-6 for two yards before leaving with a knee injury. QB Matt Moore closed out the game for the Panthers by going 6-for-11 for 63 yards with an interception.
