MLB Nate Webster is a free agent and does not expected to be offered a contract to stay with the team, and backup OLB Dwayne Rudd could be a salary cap casualty in the offseason because of his current contract. If both men are lost, however, Buccaneers director of college scouting Ruston Webster believes the team can find a quality linebacker in the draft's early rounds. "You never know what you're going to do until you see how things fall in front of you, but a lot of [the linebackers] have not only the physical tools you're looking for but the mental part as well," Webster said. "The last three years haven't been very good, but this year is different. It's a particularly good year for linebackers this year.''

Tony Grossi reports for the Plain Dealer Cleveland Browns director of football operations Dwight Clark had visioned the team adding a couple of defensive tackles along the lines of Tony Siragusa and Sam Adams of the Baltimore Ravens, big guys who can clog the middle. Coach Butch Davis arrived and plans changed. Davis does not like his linemen in the 350-pound range. Davis liked what he saw at defensive tackle at the team's first mini-camp. According to Davis, "Orpheus Roye weighed 318 [up from 290]. Mark Smith was 322 [up from 294 with Arizona]. Marcus Spriggs was in the 320s. Darius Holland was probably 320." Davis does not believe he needs to add significant size inside to improve the team's defense against the rush. Speed at linebacker, namely Dwayne Rudd, will help against that problem. Changing the defensive scheme to move away from the "two-gap" system will help as well.
Thu, 12 Apr 2001 10:24:29 -0700
The Canton Repository reports the consensus is LB Dwayne Rudd and RB Jamel White were the defensive and offensive stars of the Cleveland Browns recently concluded mini-camp. For the Browns he is expected to lineup at their 'will' linebacker position (weakside). Davis also been impressed with the defensive line. He said DT Mark Smith has "done some really, really special things." Davis has also been impressed by DL Marcus Spriggs. Davis said he will keep five to seven players who will do little except play special teams.

Zac Jackson reports for the team's official site the Cleveland Browns wrapped up their three-day mini-camp earlier today. RB Jamel White continues to earn the praise of coach Butch Davis. In this week's mini-camp, he's been returning kicks, running the ball and catching passes. Davis singled out several defensive players after today's practice sessions: DT Darius Holland, CB Lewis Sanders, DT Mark Smith, DT Marcus Spriggs and LB Dwayne Rudd. Davis reiterated his pleasure with CB Corey Fuller's coverage skills and RB Travis Prentice's hands. The team signed street free agent LB Michael Smith. He was a three-year starter under Davis at the University of Miami. He blew out his knee in 1999, but appears fully recovered.
Mon, 09 Apr 2001 18:55:38 -0700
Zac Jackson reports for the team's official site the Cleveland Browns worked FB Tarek Saleh at linebacker during today's mini-camp session. He was a linebacker for two years with the Panthers but changed his position when the Browns selected him in the Expansion Draft of 1999. When asked about new RB Curtis Enis, coach Butch Davis said, "He did OK. He’s out of shape, but he’s in twice as good a shape as he was a month ago when we first brought him in." Davis expects Enis to get better every day and knows he has the skills to make a difference. Davis singled out QBs Tim Couch, Ty Detmer and Kelly Holcomb, RB Jamel White, WR Bobby Brown, TE OJ Santiago, TE Rickey Dudley, DT Mark Smith, LB Dwayne Rudd and LB Wali Rainer as players he was especially impressed with on the first day of mini-camp.
Mon, 09 Apr 2001 15:27:15 -0700
During today's press conference, Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis stated the team is going to be mostly a multiple-tight end/H-back team. He feels the H-back position can be almost interchanged with that of the tight end in the team's offense. Davis was very upbeat about the team's current mini-camp and stated the team's quarterbacks all threw the ball very well. He was also impressed with the play of the TEs and H-backs, while also singling out TE O.J. Santiago for making a great catch. DE Courtney Brown is being worked at the right side of the defense, as the team is trying to see how comfortable he is at that position. Davis also gave high reviews of LB Dwayne Rudd and said he believes Rudd can be one of the league's best LBs.
