Browns | Team Notes

Sun, 15 Apr 2001 11:20:24 -0700

Tony Grossi reports for the Plain Dealer special teams will be an important part of coach Butch Davis' Cleveland Browns this season. Davis spent more time on special teams in the six mini-camp practices than any Browns coach in memory. Davis said there might be a core of five to seven players whose only jobs will be on special teams. Two have been identified already, DL Ryan Kuehl and FB/LB Tarek Saleh. One philosophy Davis shares with Jimmy Johnson, whom he was an assistant for 14 years, is his attention to team speed. "Every defense I've ever been around on every team, it's speed all over," he said. "I want fast, athletic defensive linemen. I want agile, quick, offensive linemen that can move and run." In his opinion the Browns don't have great team speed, but "we're faster than I thought we would be."
