Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli is not looking to add any more nose tackle. When asked if he was looking, Marinelli responded, "Oh, no. ... We're kind of three deep right there, and I like all of them right now." The three are DLs Shaun Cody, Marcus Bell and Damian Gregory. Defensive line coach Joe Cullen said the team feels they are "going to be the future of our nose tackle position."

He said Gardener is working out and he expects him to be able to put in a full season in 2002. Wannstedt added talks with agent Drew Rosenhaus on a new contract for free agent DT Tim Bowens are, "going well."

As an update to a previous story, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the Cleveland Browns hopes of trading for Miami Dolphins DT Damian Gregory took a hit today. Gregory was forced to undergo surgery on his spleen. Cleveland had reached an agreement in principle to acquire Gregory from the Dolphins in exchange for a low-round draft choice. The non-trade for Gregory could also force the Browns to change their mind on their trade of DE Stalin Colinet to the Minnesota Vikings for a late-round pick.

The Miami Herald's Jason Cole reports Miami Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt attempted to soothe his Dolphins team which is seemingly teetering on the edge of disarray in the aftermath of their latest loss to the New York Jets, with QB Jay Fiedler at the center of a firestorm of criticism. Wannstedt didn't rant with anger or discuss a false sense of accomplishment. Instead he delivered one simple message, "Welcome to the frustrating world of the NFL." The coach faces tough personnel decisions involving DT Damian Gregory (potential release) and RB J.J. Johnson (potential discipline action) waiting to be resolved, Wannstedt saw no reason to put his team on edge. Wannstedt backed Fiedler as did offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Updating a previous story, the Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins now plan to trade or release DT Damian Gregory. The team cleaned out his locker on Friday. According to several sources, coach Dave Wannstedt saw Gregory's argument with defensive line coach Clarence Brooks and asked: "What are you doing? That's your coach!" Gregory then began arguing with Wannstedt, who ordered Gregory to leave the locker room. Reached Friday at his home by the Herald, Gregory said he had been advised not to comment until the situation was resolved.

When asked if Gregory has a future with the Dolphins, coach Dave Wannstedt said, "Probably not." "It's an in-house thing," Wannstedt said. As an update to an earlier story, Todd Archer reports for the Palm Beach Post Miami Dolphins DT Tim Bowens is likely out for the team's next game due to his surgery Friday on his left knee. Jermaine Haley will replace Bowens, next to Daryl Gardener, and it's likely Damian Gregory will be activated as an extra defensive tackle. As previously reported, S Trent Gamble had minor surgery on his right shoulder and could miss about four weeks. Gamble is primarily a special teams player. If his hamstring is OK, S Shawn Wooden probably would replace Gamble on special teams.

The Sun-Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins DT Damian Gregory is trying to regain his form and make the team after spending all of last season on injured reserve. Gregory, who was impressive last year before getting injured, is now the No. 5 DT on the team behind starters Tim Bowens and Daryl Gardener and reserves Jermaine Haley and Ernest Grant. The Dolphins have said they will probably only keep four of them. Gregory said he feels good and is ready for the challenge.
