Wohlabaugh is being fitted with a custom cast to protect the fractured left thumb he suffered Aug. 18. Now that Orlando Pace has reported and is under contract, Martz would like to have his entire starting offensive line on the field together for the first time, even if it's only for a couple of series against Kansas City.

Johnson's name was floated in trade talks, which came close to occuring. The stockpiling of receivers could be a sign Johnson's departure in free agency after this season is underway. "There's no way they're keeping Johnson," suggested a league source. Wohlabaugh is expected to be safe for one more season as he grooms draft pick Melvin Fowler to replace him at center. When that turnover is complete, Wohlabaugh either will be asked to redo his original seven-year contract or be released "for salary-cap purposes."

The Canton Repository reports Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Larry Zierlein recently traveled to Nebraska to monitor Nebraska G Toniu Fonoti's individual workout. Fonoti is viewed as one of the better run-blocking prospects in the draft and had 356 "pancake blocks" in the past two years. He could be available when the Browns select at No. 16 overall in the upcoming draft. There's a chance the Browns could take a center at some point in the draft to groom as a replacement for Dave Wohlabaugh down the road.

The current Browns line has Ross Verba and Roman Oben at tackle, Dave Wohlabaugh at center and a crowd of contenders to fight it out at guard, including Jim Pyne, Steve Zahursky, Everett Lindsay, Noel LaMontagne, Brad Bedell and rookie draft pick Paul Zukauskas. Director of football operations Dwight Clark did not rule out taking another look at available free agent offensive linemen. The team has spoken with free agent Tre' Johnson, but agent Greg Ray said he hadn't talked to the Browns since April 12. Since the draft, he said he's spoken to the Falcons, Steelers, Saints and Raiders.
