Eagles | Mornhinweg looking for Schobel to catch the ball consistently

Sat, 29 Jul 2006 10:06:05 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was asked Saturday, July 29, if TE Matt Schobel is catching the ball the way he would like him to and Mornhinweg replied: "There are no excuses. Number one, he's doing an excellent job of separating. He creates separations, he's very athletic, so he's doing a nice job there. Certainly, he needs to catch the ball on a consistent basis. The second thing, now, if you catch the football, it gives you a chance to play for us. If you don't catch the football, you're not playing. It's as simple as that. Now, we are early in camp, again, we are right in the middle of installation and whatever the reasons are for, and I'm not talking just one guy, I'm talking all positions that catch the football, we've got to get it straightened out real quick."

Eagles | Smith wants to play a whole, solid year

Mon, 24 Jul 2006 06:11:49 -0700

Reuben Frank, of Phillyburbs.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles TE L.J. Smith is looking to play one solid year of good football. In 2005, Smith was among the top tight ends in the NFL with 34 catches for 350 yards in the team's first six games. After that, QB Donovan McNabb's sports hernia grew worse and eventually ended his season and WR Terrell Owens was suspended. The last 10 games, the Eagles went 2-8 and Smith caught just 27 passes for 332 yards. Smith is entering his fourth NFL season, once again striving to elevate himself into the NFL's elite. Only six tight ends in the league had more than his eight catches of 20 or more yards last season. The Eagles signed veteran TE Matt Schobel to take some pressure off Smith, who's been the Eagles' only real receiving threat since TE Chad Lewis got hurt in the 2004 NFC Championship Game.

Mon, 15 May 2006 10:53:40 -0700

The Associated Press reports Philadelphia Eagles TE Matt Schobel could end up in two tight-end sets with Philadelphia Eagles TE L.J. Smith. "They remind me of a couple of situations, (former Packer Mark) Chmura and Keith Jackson in Green Bay and Brent Jones and Greg Clark in San Francisco," Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "L.J. and Matt kind of remind me of that type of situation, where you can put some heat of the defense, putting them on the same side, splitting them out wide, or one tight and one in the slot. So, we can do a lot of things."
