The Associated Press reports New York Giants RB Curtis Keaton will be considered for returning punts. Keaton has returned 48 kickoffs and averaged 20.8 yards a return in three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints. Keaton returned kickoffs in drills on Monday, Aug. 9.

Brian Allee-Walsh, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett said the offensive line could have played better in the Monday, August 11 pre-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, but Saints RB Curtis Keaton missed some openings and failed to convert on two third-and-one plays. "I didn't think our line was as physical as we would have liked," Haslett said. "But we haven't had our line together yet as a whole. We haven't had much continuity."

Jeff Duncan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports for the Sporting News that New Orleans Saints RB Curtis Keaton needs to show improvement in training camp this year to gain the confidence of the coaching staff. If he fails to improve, the team may look for a veteran running back in free agency.

The Times Picayune reports the New Orleans Saints have signed street free agent RB Tavian Banks to a one-year contract. Banks has not played since suffering a severe knee injury in 1999, but he worked out for the Saints on Friday and passed his physical. He will compete with James Fenderson for the third running-back spot behind RB Deuce McAllister and backup RB Curtis Keaton.

The Ap reports New Orleans Saints backup RB Curtis Keaton is moving up the depth chart, after becoming more comfortable with the offense. "Curtis can play right now," coach Jim Haslett said. "He knows our entire first- and second-down stuff. He doesn't know the third-down stuff, yet. If Deuce (McAllister) were to get nicked up, we'd go with Curtis on first and second downs and James Fenderson on third down until Curtis gets more comfortable with the whole system."

Updating earlier reports, New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis said RB Curtis Keaton has the "versatility and speed" the team is always looking to add to their offense. He said the coaching staff was extremely impressed with him when they prepared for their game against Cincinnati a week ago. Head coach Jim Haslett added that Keaton can also be used as a kick-returner.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Cincinnati Bengals seem to be very deep at the running back position. With starter Corey Dillon (foot) and top backup Brandon Bennett (toe) out due to injuries, Curtis Keaton and Rudi Johnson had marvelous games. Keaton rushed 31 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns last weekend, while Johnson rushed for more than 100 yards for the second straight preseason game.

He is expected to push Brandon Bennett for the No. 2 spot in training camp. Keaton is an improved blocker and receiver who is showing excellent stop-and-start quickness as he explodes into the secondary, during the team's off-season workouts.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Cincinnati Bengals RB/kick returner Curtis Keaton started the season strong but has faded fast. His season average on kick returns has slipped to 21.5. Keaton said his problem could be that he's trying too hard because, at times, he appears to be making too many moves, rather than picking a lane and charging straight upfield. Keaton may also be fighting frustration that he's not being used more at running back. He has just four carries for 47 yards, and three of the carries were in garbage time against San Diego.

Bengals | Defense Takes Round One

Geoff Hobson reports for Bengals.com the Cincinnati Bengals defense won today's scrimmage over the offense 14-0. Rookie WR Chad Johnson and RB Curtis Keaton had the best days on offense. Keaton picked up 33 yards on seven carries. QB Jon Kitna put together the best offensive drive for the offense, but the drive ended when he threw an interception at his own four-yard line. Backup QB Akili Smith fumbled off a shotgun snap as well. Coach Dick LeBeau said he saw none of his three QBs standout during the scrimmage. RB Corey Dillon, who the coaches feel should not be subject to hitting this early and OT Willie Anderson (funeral) sat out.
