The AP reports Cleveland Browns backup QB Kelly Holcomb will start the team's first-round playoff game Sunday in Pittsburgh. He is taking over for injured QB Tim Couch (broken leg). "It's probably at least a four- to six-week healing process," coach Butch Davis said of Couch's injury. "That's a huge blow to the team. His leadership. We certainly wouldn't be in the playoffs if not for the performances and victories he helped lead this team to." Davis added the Browns would sign another quarterback early this week as a backup for Holcomb. The likeliest candidate is QB Kevin Thompson.

Patrick McManamon reports for the Akron Beacon Journal Cleveland Browns WR Kevin Johnson practiced again today, but he's not sure he'll play this week. Coach Butch Davis said he won't decide about Johnson's status until Friday. G Everett Lindsay sprained his left ankle in the morning practice and he was seen wearing a boot in the afternoon. H-back Mike Sellers left the morning practice after another player landed on his knee and he then skipped the afternoon practice. Coach Davis said, Sellers had a "small minor boo-boo on his knee, and he'll be fine." As an update to a previous story, backup QB Kevin Thompson will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee and miss one-to-three weeks.

Coach Butch Davis said there is a possibility Ross Verba, whom the team has penciled in at right tackle, could be taken off the PUP list on Monday. G Jim Pyne (sprained ankle) will not play in this week's pre-season game, but he could practice next week.

The Boston Globe reports New England Patriots backup QB Michael Bishop has made the most out of his limited time in NFL Europe. Bishop, who is playing for the Frankfurt Galaxy, has been told by the coaching staff that he’ll play the entire game Saturday instead of platooning with QB Kevin Thompson. Bishop has a 107.5 quarterback rating, which is the best in the league, and he’s run for 94 yards on 11 carries after splitting time the first two weeks.

The Plain Dealer's Tony Grossi reports the Cleveland Browns are happy with their depth chart at QB. Tim Couch is the sold starter and he's backed up by Ty Detmer and Kelly Holcomb. Spergon Wynn and Kevin Thompson remain on the roster and are in NFL Europe currently. Earlier this off-season team's had tried to trade for Detme, but now it looks as though he will stay put. "He is definitely not trade bait for just something. He's too good," coach Butch Davis said of Detmer.

The Canton Repository reports the release of QB Doug Pederson yesterday leaves Ty Detmer as the team's No. 2 QB and Spergon Wynn and Kevin Thompson to compete for the No. 3 job. Director of Football Operations Dwight Clark recently said, "We need defensive tackles ... plural," which could mean the team may potentially pursue DT Ted Washington, just released in Buffalo. The team needs run stoppers and the 2000 Buffalo media guide called Washington "perhaps the best run-stopping defensive lineman in the game."

The team will put him on the Injured Reserve List later this week. The Browns will only have Tony Graziani, signed last Thursday, and WR Kevin Johnson as backup QBs behind Doug Pederson. The Browns were planning to use WR Dennis Northcutt as a QB once again and even expand his role before he was injured.

ClevelandBrowns.com reports Cleveland Browns rookie QB Spergon Wynn (knee), who was the No. 3 QB early this year but started last week, underwent an MRI on Wednesday that showed a slight bone bruise and he may now be done for the year. Kevin Thompson, the team's current No. 3 QB, twisted his ankle and may not be able to play this weekend after sitting out Thursday's practice. Doug Pederson, as reported here, is expected to start this weekend. WR Kevin Johnson worked as the scout team quarterback but said he thinks Pederson gives the team the best chance to win. The team hopes to add another quarterback.
