Buccaneers.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Akili Smith shined for the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe during Week 5, completing 9 of 11 passes for 90 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Smith finished with a 131.1 passer rating, was not sacked and rushed twice for 21 yards.

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage stressed the team will not get caught up in drafting a quarterback with their high first-round draft choice (No. 3 overall) if the player is not viewed as the best available and a good fit. "For every Peyton Manning, there was a Ryan Leaf," Savage said. "For every Donovan McNabb, there was a Tim Couch and Akili Smith. The air is thin up there and sometimes we don't get enough oxygen. I think it's proven that the quarterbacks come from anywhere. There is no science involved in that one."

Updating a previous report, according to Buccaneers.com, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Akili Smith, currently allocated to the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe, has been named NFL Europe's Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2. Smith helped rally the Galaxy from a 14-0 deficit to a 23-14 victory over the Amsterdam Admirals by completing nine-of-12 passes for 95 yards and scoring on an eight-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Buccaneers.com reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in the market for another quarterback and could bolster the position via free agency or the NFL Draft. "Yes, we're looking for a veteran quarterback," said General Manager Bruce Allen. "Last year, we went to camp with four quarterbacks; three you could say were veteran quarterbacks, and a young Chris Simms. We'll probably do that again, and we're seriously looking at the draft for a quarterback." The club currently has QBs Brian Griese, Chris Simms and Akili Smith.

Green Bay Packers QB Akili Smith will receive increased snaps this weekend in the team's preseason game on Saturday, August 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, according to Jason Bellamy of Packers.com. Smith is getting additional work as a result of the team's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, August 4 beign cut short due to lightning.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers backup QB Akili Smith was impressive enough during the first week of action that he may be able to make the team's roster, but he's still working as the team's fourth-quarterback. Offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said that Smith will play a lot during pre-season games.

"It's been hell for everybody. I'm kind of baffled that they drafted me. Ten games into my second season, they benched me, and it was over after that," Smith said. "I thank the fans for all their support. My career is definitely not over. Twenty-two games, seventeen starts. I've got a lot of football left in me."

Bengals.com’s Geoff Hobson reports the Cincinnati Bengals acquisition of veteran QB Shane Matthews leaves questions as to whether or not QB Akili Smith will remain with the team or not. The team has remained mum on what they’ll do with Smith, but they could drop his salary cap hit to $1.8 million if they release him after June 1. Smith’s agent, Kennard McGuire, said if the Bengals were to sign a QB they targeted than he expected a quick release for his client.

"Yeah, it really did surprise me. I don't really know what they're looking at right now," Smith said. The Bengals are trying to decide whether to keep Smith, cut him and go with a developmental guy behind Jon Kitna and Carson Palmer, or cut him and sign a veteran between Kitna and Palmer to protect their No. 1 pick for at least the early part of the season.

He said he expects the team to cut him after June 1st, especially if they use their No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback. If the Bengals do cut Smith, they will have to absorb $4.62 million dollars of remaining signing bonus he is due. However, they can spread the bonus over the next two seasons.

They might decide to trade it away, or they could draft QB Carson Palmer from USC. If they select Palmer, they would most likely take a different route in development than they did with Akili Smith.
