Chargers | Foley says shooting could end his career

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 23:40:30 -0800

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers LB Steve Foley (leg, hip) said he thinks his career might be over after getting shot by an off-duty policeman. "I don't want to count anything out or rule myself out, but it's a reality that I won't be able to play again, period," Foley said. Foley was shot in the left leg, hip and hand, which required several surgeries. He said he suffered severe nerve damage in his leg and has lost 50 pounds. Doctors told Foley it could take a year or more for the nerve damage to heal. He can move around on his own, but he has trouble walking and performing other activities. "If I sit down for a short period of time, my leg will stiffen up, my ankle will stiffen up and it makes it even that much more difficult to move around. There's a lot of nerve damage. That's what I'm dealing with, is nerve pain. I'm not able to get around like I normally would be," Foley added.

While there is no evidence of Foley using steroids, prosecutors wish to test his blood due to his history of problems with law enforcement. "His history of aggressive and even violent contact with law enforcement indicates the possibility of more than mere alcohol involvement," wrote criminal investigator Dan Nordell. "(Steroids) can cause erratic behavior in those that use them. This has been given names like 'roid rage for the uncontrollable outbursts and violence experienced by some users."

Sun, 03 Sep 2006 14:07:56 -0700

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports San Diego Chargers LB Steve Foley was shot near his home early Sunday morning, Sept. 3, following a traffic stop by an off-duty city of Coronado police officer. Foley's injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Early in the morning, the off-duty officer started following a suspected drunk driver in the area of northbound Highway 163 and Highway 52. After stopping at a red light, the off-duty officer pulled beside Foley, identified himself as a police officer, and ordered him to pull over, but Foley drove away. The off-duty officer followed Foley to a cul-de-sac in Poway, where he lives. Foley got out of the car and started walking toward the officer, while his female passenger drove the car alongside him, sheriff's homicide Lt. Dennis Brugos said. The officer identified himself again and then fired a warning shot into the bushes. Foley reached into his pants with his right hand as he approached the officer and the officer fired at the suspect. Foley acknowledged he'd been shot, Brugos said, but continued to move toward the officer, who fired again. Foley then fell to the ground. Brugos said it was unclear whether Foley was armed.
