49ers | Joe Williams to IR

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams (ankle) will be placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured with ankle injury, according to a source, Saturday, Sept. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Williams was a late-round flier for owners trying to capitalize on Carlos Hyde's durability issues. He can be removed from all single-year cheat sheets.

49ers | Joe Williams picking up the pace

Fri, 04 Aug 2017 18:46:46 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has been playing better of late, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. "So I thought he's put two good practices in a row," Shanahan said Friday. Aug. 4. "It takes time with some of these guys."

Fantasy Tip: Williams will likely open the year as the backup to Carlos Hyde, but with questions about how well Hyde fits Shanahan's system, Williams is worth grabbing as a RB5.

49ers | Joe Williams getting off to a 'slow start'

Wed, 02 Aug 2017 09:22:32 -0700

San Francisco 49ers rookie RB Joe Williams has gotten off to a slow start in his first training camp, presumably because he is still getting familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive system. He also has to do a better job with ball security, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Fantasy Tip: Williams was a fourth-round pick this spring who was seen as a serious challenger for the starting job, primarily because it was well-documented he was handpicked by Shanahan and highly regarded running backs coach Bobby Turner. It sounds as if he is going through a typical rookie struggles, but his slow start has allowed Carlos Hyde and Tim Hightower to get a better grasp on the first two spots on the depth chart, making Williams little more than a late-round fantasy investment at this point.

49ers | Joe Williams pushing for playing time

Fri, 21 Jul 2017 19:44:13 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has "put himself into a position to compete for a significant role" heading into training camp, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Fantasy Tip: Williams was handpicked by head coach Kyle Shanahan, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him pass Carlos Hyde on the depth chart or at least split carries. Williams could be a steal as a second-round pick in rookie drafts, and he has enough upside to grab as a RB4 in redraft leagues.

49ers | Carlos Hyde must earning starting job

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 12:32:14 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde will need to earn his starting job over rookie RB Joe Williams, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Maiocco envisions a committee approach with RB Tim Hightower also being involved.

Fantasy Tip: Williams does have some upside heading into his first year, but Hyde will start as long as he is in good health. Committees obviously hurt fantasy value, but Hyde remains a low-end RB1 to high-end RB2 candidate.

49ers | Joe Williams has chance to start in 2017

Wed, 17 May 2017 10:46:28 -0700

San Francisco 49ers fourth-round pick RB Joe Williams has a "legitimate chance" to "immediately unseat" RB Carlos Hyde as the team's top running back this season, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Fantasy Tip: Head coach Kyle Shanahan convinced general manager John Lynch to draft Williams, even after Lynch initially left him off the draft board. Hyde also has been incredibly injury-prone and is in the final year of his rookie contract and the team's new brass isn't tied to him in any way, so they aren't going to start Hyde over "their guy" unless he is clearly the better option. Williams will almost certainly make some starts in 2017 and should be considered a steal in rookie drafts if he lasts very far into the second round.
