Dave Hutchinson, of the Star-Ledger, reports that the New York Jets have spoken with the agent for veteran DT Bernard Whittington and may sign him as a replacement for suspended DT Josh Evans. Whittington played with the Cincinnati Bengals for the past two seasons after seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He made a free agent visit to the Jets two years ago, but opted to sign with the Bengals.

Houshmandzadeh (ankle) is undergoing therapy on his sprained left ankle in Los Angeles and should be fully healed in four-to-six weeks. DL Bernard Whittington (elbow) will be cleared in about four weeks after having multiple loose particles removed from his right elbow.

As an update to a previous story, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the deal DL Bernard Whittington will sign with the Bengals is a two-year, $1.35 million contract. Whittington will earn a signing bonus of $125,000 and base salaries of $600,000 for 2001 and $625,000 for 2002. Whittington is expected to primarily be used at end by the Bengals, but he will probably also see some action at tackle during the season.

The AP reports Colts president Bill Polian said the team has little interest in re-signing S Jason Belser, LB Dwight Hollier and DE Bernard Whittington who become unrestricted free agents on Friday. Polian also said DE Shawn King, who was reinstated earlier today, signed a restructured contract. With their moves today, the Colts who had been about $6 million over the cap for this season, are now about $1.9 million under the cap.
