Dave Hutchinson, of the Star-Ledger, reports that the New York Jets have spoken with the agent for veteran DT Bernard Whittington and may sign him as a replacement for suspended DT Josh Evans. Whittington played with the Cincinnati Bengals for the past two seasons after seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He made a free agent visit to the Jets two years ago, but opted to sign with the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Cincinnati Bengals RB Brandon Bennett (hand) had surgery Monday to repair torn tendons in his left hand and will need 3 to 4 weeks to recover. WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (ankle) is undergoing therapy on his sprained left ankle in Los Angeles and should be fully healed in four-to-six weeks. DL Bernard Whittington (elbow) will be cleared in about four weeks after having multiple loose particles removed from his right elbow.

As an update to a previous story, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the deal DL Bernard Whittington will sign with the Bengals is a two-year, $1.35 million contract. Whittington will earn a signing bonus of $125,000 and base salaries of $600,000 for 2001 and $625,000 for 2002. Whittington is expected to primarily be used at end by the Bengals, but he will probably also see some action at tackle during the season.

The Cincinnati Post reports the Bengals had a good visit with free agent DE Kenny Holmes (Titans) on Thursday. Agent Mitch Frankel said, although no serious offers had been exchanged, he felt Bengals VP Paul H. Brown was turning up the heat to get a deal done. Holmes is scheduled to visit with the Giants next. The Bengals are trying to arrange a visit for free agent DT Bernard Whittington (Colts) for next week.

The AP reports Colts president Bill Polian said the team has little interest in re-signing S Jason Belser, LB Dwight Hollier and DE Bernard Whittington who become unrestricted free agents on Friday. Polian also said DE Shawn King, who was reinstated earlier today, signed a restructured contract. With their moves today, the Colts who had been about $6 million over the cap for this season, are now about $1.9 million under the cap.

Mike Chappell reports in the Indianapolis Star the Colts release of CB Tyrone Poole on Wednesday saved them roughly $2.68 million against the 2001 salary cap. The team could still release another veteran, LB Cornelius Bennett. If they do release Bennett, they will save an additional $1.75 million. The team also has to decide whether it re-signs three of their free agents, FS Jason Belser, DT Bernard Whittington and LB Dwight Hollier. Colts president Bill Polian is expected to address the media on Thursday to discuss various personnel matters.

The Indianapolis Star/News reports the Indianapolis Colts are likely to be without DL Josh Williams (ankle) this weekend but head coach Jim Mora wasn't ready to rule him officially out on Wednesday. If he can't play, Bernard Whittington would replace him. WR E.G. Green (knee) and LB Dwight Hollier (shoulder) are likely going to be gametime decisions. Should Hollier miss the game, the team would likely start Ratcliff Thomas in his place. OL Adam Meadows (concussion) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to start against the Jets this weekend.
