ChicagoBears.com reports Chicago Bears S Larry Whigham has been chosen to participate in the NFL Europe Coaching Program, a joint venture between NFL Player Development and the NFLPA. Whigham will be one of 12 current players working as a coaching intern during NFL Europe training camp in Tampa, Florida, from Feb. 23-March 23.

The Daily Herald reports Chicago Bears S Larry Whigham was fined $5,000 by the NFL for writing 3:16 on his arm during the Philadelphia Eagles game. Whigham plans to appeal the fine. "I told them I play on third down," he said. "On third down, I've got to look up the No. 1 receiver for a six cut. We'll see what happens."

The Sun Times reports Chicago Bears S/special teams player Larry Whigham was fined $5,000 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct in the pre-season finale August 29 at Miami. He leveled Dolphins WR Albert Johnson on an incomplete pass across the middle. After the play he celebrated the hit a little too much for the NFL. Whigham said he will appeal.

Updating an earlier story, the Daily Herald reports Chicago Bears rookie S Bobby Gray moved into the team's starting lineup Wednesday at strong safety in place of the injured Mike Brown. Veteran Larry Whigham remained a backup. S Michael Green is sliding over to Brown's free safety spot. He's a very physical young man. He's worked hard," defensive coordinator Greg Blache said of Gray. "He's progressing; he's coming along. We stuck him in with the first unit and let him go. My impressions on the field were that the kid did a good job."

John Mullin reports for the Chicago Tribune it will be tomorrow before the Chicago Bears will have a better idea on how their injured players are doing. TE Fred Baxter (ankle), DE Phillip Daniels (stinger), S/special teams ace Larry Whigham (hamstring) and WR Dez White (hamstring) are all expected to try and practice. If Baxter can't play, TE Dustin Lyman may see extensive action.

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bears special teams ace/S Larry Whigham was ejected from today's game for throwing a punch at Packers S Chris Akins. The two were tangled on the play, and after knocking Whigham down, Akins appeared to throw a couple of punches. Whigham took exception and came up and gave Akins a shot.

The Daily Herald reports Chicago Bears TE Fred Baxter (hip, neck), QB Shane Matthews (ribs) and S Larry Whigham all remain questionable for Sunday's game. RG Chris Villarrial did not practice on Thursday because of a hip injury but said he'd be fine for Sunday's game. Baxter, who did not practice and was walking very gingerly on Thursday, actually appears doubtful, as does Matthews, but Whigham could be available. Look for Matthews to be the team's No. 3 QB.

The Sun Times reports Chicago Bears TE Fred Baxter (hip) not be re-evaluated until later in the week. MRIs did not reveal a serious problem, but the nature of the injury has been difficult to pinpoint. ''It actually starts from the neck and goes down to the hip, but we list it as a hip because he couldn't run because of that,'' said coach Dick Jauron, who added that Baxter has improved. Backup SS and special teams ace Larry Whigham will be examined after leaving the field Sunday because of a sprained right ankle. QB Shane Matthews is still bothered by his rib injury and he is likely to remain the team's No. 3 QB this week.

RBs James Allen (hip flexor) and Anthony Thomas (knee) remained on the sidelines, neither participating in any drills. Coaches are not pleased with Allen's unavailability. Injuries at TE may force the Bears to try FB Scott Dragos at TE.

DT Alfonso Boone suffered a cracked rib Monday and OT Chris Brown and FB/TE Scott Dragos both had calf strains.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs turned their focus for a speed WR and kick-return specialist to Rams restricted free agent WR/KR Tony Horne on Tuesday. If the Chiefs want to sign him to an offer sheet, they must do so by Monday. If he is signed and the Rams don't match, there is no compensation. In other news, Florida WR John Capel, an Olympic sprinter, is expected to visit with the Chiefs this week. He hasn't played football since the 1999 season. He sat out last season to concentrate on the Olympics. The Chiefs will entertain two other free agents this week, both special team-type players, S Larry Whigham (Patriots) and CB Taje Allen (Rams).

The Chicago Tribune reports the Chicago Bears continue to negotiate with free agent DT Ted Washington. The two sides reportedly have come up with a signing bonus/first-year package that is acceptable to both sides. Salary proposals for the second and third years are below typical starter money. Agent Angelo Wright still feels the two sides can reach an agreement. "I felt some things had to be done structurally to the amounts in the second and third years and we'll back working on that this week," said Wright. Bears DB Frankie Smith, who led the Bears in special-teams tackles last season, has talked with the Oakland Raiders. The Bears have offered him a minimum-salary based contract. The Bears have talked about free agent Larry Whigham (New England) as an alternative to Smith.

Patriots | Padding the Cap

As a follow up to an earlier story, the Boston Herald reports releasing DT Henry Thomas earlier today saved the Patriots $1.6 million against the salary cap. The release of S Larry Whigham saved the team $320,000. Whigham said the team never approached him about taking a pay cut. Whigham was due a $50,000 roster bonus tomorrow. Thomas could potentially be re-signed at a reduced rate. As previously reported Bills free agent DL Shawn Price is expected to visit the Patriots within the next few days. Agent Neil Schwartz said the team never made a serious offer for G Pete Kendall who eventually signed in Arizona.

The Boston Globe reports as the New England Patriots continue to work on extending the contract of QB Dre Bledsoe, they also are eyeing a few free agents. The Patriots are expected to make a second round of veteran cuts to clear cap room to allow them to sign some free agents. They are eyeing former Jets DL Ernie Logan and LB Bryan Cox. The Patriots have had preliminary talks with Logan's agent, Ralph Vitolo, at the NFL Combine. The Pats can make some space by restructuring the contracts of Willie McGinest and Ted Johnson, who currently count $7.2 million and $6.2 million against the cap. Other restructure candidates include DT Henry Thomas, OL Max Lane, LB Chris Slade, and S Larry Whigham.

Vikings | Free Agency Note

According to Don Banks, in an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Vikings are preparing for a loss of some of their own Free Agents by bringing in Free Agents from other teams. The six scheduled for visits over the next few days are Dolphins LB Robert Jones, Patriots DL Devin Wyman, Patriots S Larry Whigham, Redskins DE Jamal Duff, Jets LB Dwayne Gordon and Seattle DL Phillip Daniels (the only RFA in the lot). The Vikings, who are said to be between $3 and $4 million under the cap are focusing on re-signing LB Ed McDaniel. S Orlando Thomas who we reported earlier had a visit with Chicago scheduled is now expected to visit with the Chargers as well. The most popular Vikings Free Agent has been No. 3 DL Jason Fisk who had been contacted by at least 12 teams.
