Lions | Ameer Abdullah not getting featured?

Sat, 05 Aug 2017 08:31:25 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner received the goal-line reps with the first-team offense during a padded practice ahead of Ameer Abdullah on Friday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: It is just one practice, but a pretty clear indication Zenner must be running ahead of Abdullah for short-yardage and goal-line work. It also contradicts the recent reports out of Detroit that Abdullah would be "featured." It seems pretty clear Theo Riddick and Zenner are going to be involved in the red zone. It all adds up to Abdullah being a risky RB2 selection in the fourth-round area of most drafts.

Lions | Coach believes Zach Zenner can help

Sun, 25 Jun 2017 16:23:54 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said he believes RB Zach Zenner can be an effective option for the Lions this season because of his skill set and his steady improvement. "He can run the ball. He can pass protect. He can catch the ball out of the backfield if need be and I think just another year under his belt is going to be a great help. Zach is one of those guys that I think without question can be effective for us," Caldwell said.

Lions | Zach Zenner established himself in 2016

Mon, 06 Feb 2017 09:48:14 -0800

Lions RB Zach Zenner finished with 334 yards on 88 carries for the year and a team-high four rushing touchdowns, leading the team in rushing the last three weeks of the season. Even though Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick are expected to be completely healthy by the start of 2017, WR Anquan Boldin said in a recent interview Zenner could handle a growing role. "I think he's a guy that definitely will take the next step next year. … Whenever you have a young guy like that who is able to play every down, that's big. He's a guy that can run the ball effectively, catch the ball out of the backfield, he can pick up blitzes," Boldin said.

Fantasy Tip: Abdullah should remain the odds-on favorite to open camp as the starter. However, Zenner flashed enough ability as a runner and receiver down the stretch to be used to be used in tandem with him if Detroit chooses to do so. Riddick should return to his usual role of "space back". Abdullah and Riddick should be considered low-end RB2 options next season, while Zenner can be considered a valuable handcuff.
