San Diego Chargers KR Leon Johnson (ankle) suffered a sprained left ankle on the opening kickoff of the second half of Week 13's game, when Kansas City Chiefs LB Fred Jones pulled Johnson down by the facemask. Jones was charged with a personal foul on the play, according to David Neville of Chargers.com. Johnson later returned to the game.

Updating previous reports, The Chicago Tribune reports the move to have Chicago Bears RB Leon Johnson replace RB Anthony Thomas looks to be more than a one-game move. While Johnson didn’t start last week, that’s about all he didn’t do. Head coach Dick Jauron said it’s less important who starts the game, and more important who finishes it. “We’ve been trying to work Leon in more regularly,” Jauron said. “Earlier in the year we were trying to do it by how the game went or a feel in the game and it just wasn’t working. We weren’t getting Leon enough snaps.”

"We had determined this week that we would play Leon more in the passing situations anyway," coach Dick Jauron said. "As you saw today, he's got tremendous hands. He's just a terrific athlete and very comfortable in the pass game." Jauron said Johnson would be in on most passing situations in the future.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Bears rookie RB Adrian Peterson is in the mix to serve as a backup behind starter Anthony Thomas. RBs Leon Johnson and Rabih Abdullah are also in the mix. RBs coach Earle Mosley said Peterson has been working hard to make the transition to the Bears' offense after playing in an unconventional spread offense in college. He's just now learning how to lineup in a two-point stance.

The Daily Southtown reports Chicago Bears head coach Dick Jauron has been so impressed with RB Leon Johnson's ability to return punts, that he has relieved starting CB R.W. McQuarters of punt return duties. Johnson apparently has won a permanent job after returning four punts for a 13-yard average and had a Bears season-best punt return of 35 yards.

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bears starting CB R.W. McQuarters has been added to the injury list for Sunday's game with a strained groin. He was able to practice Friday and he is expected to play Sunday. The team may use RB Leon Johnson on punt returns to cut down on McQuarters' workload and to avoid the added risk of injury to a defensive starter.

According to the Chicago Tribune, CB R.W. McQuarters will replace recently released Glyn Milburn as the the team's No. 1 punt returner Sunday. Leon Johnson is also expected to be active and used on punt returns. Kickoffs will be returned by two from a group of three consisting of Johnson, Jerry Azumah and Autry Denson.

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers held tryouts for several free agents on Tuesday. They were: former Minnesota Vikings KR David Palmer, former Kansas City Chiefs KR J.J. Moses, former Oakland Raiders RB/KR Eric Metcalf and former New York Jets RB/PR Leon Johnson. The team may need to sign a kick-returner if CB/KR Allen Rossum does not recover in time from his hamstring pull.

Randy Lange reports for the Bergen Record, in addition to the previously reported interest from the Jets, the New York Giants also gave free agent RB/PR Leon Johnson a physical and conducted an MRI exam on his knee. The Giants, like the Jets, are taking a cautious approach with Johnson. His agent, Art Weiss, said Johnson is ready for a return to the NFL.
