Cardinals | David Johnson could return in late November

Wed, 11 Oct 2017 17:51:36 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson's (wrist) earliest return date could be around Thanksgiving, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is currently on the Reserve/Injured list and is still six to eight weeks away from playing again. Adrian Peterson and Andre Ellington will see time at running back with Peterson receiving most of the carries and Ellington being used in the passing game. Ellington can be a low-end No. 2 running back or flex option in point-per-reception leagues, while Peterson can be considered a flex option.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer expects different offense

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 19:25:38 -0700

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he expects the offense to change "drastically" without RB David Johnson (wrist).

Fantasy Tip: Even without Johnson, the Arizona offense could be in for a good showing in Week 2 against an Indianapolis defense that was torched by Jared Goff in the opener. Palmer could be a sneaky QB1.

Cardinals | David Johnson surgery set for Thursday

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 07:14:29 -0700

Updating previous reports, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) will have surgery on his dislocated wrist Thursday, Sept. 14, and the team is hoping he returns in December.

Fantasy Tip: He was originally given a two-to-three-month timeframe, but that appears it was optimistic on the front end. We're looking at 10 to 12 weeks, but even that isn't a given the way Ian Rapoport's tweet was framed. If you have five bench spots or more, and you can sacrifice depth at a position, he's worth stashing for the fantasy playoffs. Kerwynn Williams and Andre Ellington figure to be in a committee approach in Johnson's absence. Both are RB3 options to target on waivers.

Cardinals | Arizona turning to Andre Ellington?

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 21:05:16 -0700

Adding more context to an earlier report, Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians told Sirius XM NFL Radio Tuesday, Sept. 12, he is hopeful RB David Johnson (wrist) can return "by Thanksgiving or Christmas." In the meantime, Arians hinted RB Andre Ellington would be the player most likely to carry the load for the Cardinals in Johnson's absence.

Fantasy Tip: This comes as a surprise in that Kerwynn Williams is Johnson's direct backup, but Arians told Sirius XM that Ellington "was the guy that we drafted David Johnson to play behind" and Arizona "kind of built (the offense) around Andre a few years back" before Johnson's emergence. It's an extremely optimistic take from the coach, but one owners should be willing to take at face value at the moment. While this most likely will be a committee attack, Ellington appears to be the one to grab in fantasy.

Cardinals | Arizona pessimistic about David Johnson?

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 20:19:58 -0700

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians told reporters Tuesday, Sept. 12, he hopes RB David Johnson (wrist) will be able to return from the Reserve/Injured list by Christmas.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals host the New York Giants on Christmas Eve in Week 16, but the real news here is the growing pessimism regarding Johnson. If we take Arians' assertion at face value, Johnson will miss almost the entire season with a wrist injury and injury that has been given a timeline of two-to-three months. Owners may want to hold onto Johnson for a week or two to see if the prognosis changes, but it appears the No. 1 overall pick in most fantasy drafts won't be around for most of 2017.

Cardinals | David Johnson officially goes to IR

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 13:50:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) was officially placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Sept. 12. Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) was officially re-signed in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Even with Chris Johnson returning to the Cardinals, Kerwynn Williams is the running back to own with David Johnson on the shelf. Williams will split time with Andre Ellington and Johnson, but he took over duties for Johnson last week and should be one of the top waiver wire additions heading into Week 2. Chris Johnson is merely a speculative add in deeper leagues.

Cardinals | David Johnson out 2-3 months

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 08:40:21 -0700

Updating previous reports, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) will have surgery this week and is expected to miss two to three months, according to a source. Johnson will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list designated to return.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson was the first player taken in most drafts, and this obviously is a huge shakeup of the fantasy hierarchy. Kerwynn Williams figures to see increased action, but he is unproven and small. There are no guarantees he can be more than a rotational player with Andre Ellington and D.J. Foster. This looks like a committee system that may not bode too well for fantasy owners. Williams and Ellington need to be owned in PPR leagues, but you're unlikely to catch lightning in that bottle. If you own Johnson, you have to hold on to him. Even if he returns and plays the final month, he has enough upside to stack up to an RB3 over a season.

Cardinals | David Johnson heading to IR?

Mon, 11 Sep 2017 12:03:01 -0700

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) may be placed on the Reserve/Injured list if he is forced to miss a significant amount of time, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Those who drafted Johnson should start worrying a little bit. As stated earlier, though, if Johnson does miss a good chunk of time then Kerwynn Williams will be a top waiver wire option, with Andre Ellington and/or Chris Johnson behind him. Look for Johnson to be re-signed soon. Other running back options include Tarik Cohen, Javorius Allen and Mike Tolbert.

Cardinals | David Johnson may need surgery

Mon, 11 Sep 2017 11:50:17 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) could have surgery on his injured wrist, according to a source. A decision on whether or not to have the surgery is expected within 24 to 48 hours.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously this would be the biggest loss of Week 1, although Johnson would likely still be able to return this year. In the meantime, put Kerwynn Williams and Andre Ellington on waiver wire alert in case Johnson does need surgery.
