The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Chicago Bears will release OT James Williams before free agency begins at the end of the month. He is due a roster bonus of around $500,000 in March, and is entering the final season of a four-year, $17 million deal.

The Chicago Sun Times speculates Chicago Bears OLG Rex Tucker will be the next member of the team to receive a long-term extension. Tucker, entering the final year of his deal with the team, may be the most logical choice because Bears' ORT James Williams is entering his 12th season and his contract, along with that of ORG Chris Villarrial, expires after 2003. Tucker's agent, Joe Coletta, said he's touched base with the Bears but that's as far as it's gone so far. Tucker will likely be looking for a deal in the six-year, $26.25 million range that Pittsburgh game OG Alan Faneca earlier this year.

The Chicago Tribune reports the status of injured QB Cade McNown won't be known until later in the week after suffering a "strained right side" in the game against the St. Louis Rams. T James Williams reaggravated his injured left knee but will not have surgery until after the season and expects to play in week 17. WR Marcus Robinson's right quadriceps contusion is not expected to sideline him. More on the following players will be known later in the week; RB Curtis Enis and his strained left shoulder and hyperextended left elbow and Walt Harris and his strained right hamstring.
