Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien, others coming up

Fri, 27 May 2016 15:03:57 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Peter O'Brien and RPs Silvino Bracho and Dominic Leone were recalled from Class AAA Friday, May 27. RP Josh Collmenter (shoulder) was also reinstated from the 15-day disabled list. SPs Shelby Miller (finger) and Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) were placed on the disabled list in corresponding moves.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien is a big-time power prospect who has transitioned from catcher to the outfield. He hit 26 homers in the minors in 2015 and is a waiver wire target for home runs in the short term in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. His stay could be short, though, with David Peralta returning from the DL soon. Bracho has potential to be a successful late-inning reliever, but he's a watch list guy for now. Collmenter is likely to serve in a long-relief role despite the D-backs having a need for starters at the moment. He can be ignored in fantasy.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien launches another homer

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 15:21:32 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Peter O'Brien hit his second home run in the past four days for Class AAA Reno Thursday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien launched 35 bombs with a .284/.332/.551 slash line with Reno in 2015, but only received 12 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks. He is an intriguing source of power with a bat that is ready for the majors. The issue is his defense, as the converted catcher is now primarily playing left field. O'Brien is a player to watch in all fantasy formats, and if you have the luxury, a speculative stash in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues isn't out of the question.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien sent down

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 09:28:58 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien was sent to minor league camp Saturday, April 2.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien is still maturing as a major league hitter, but there's no denying that he has the potential to deliver raw power at the next level. With A.J. Pollock seriously injured, that could open up more time in the outfield for O'Brien later this year. Keep him close in NL-only and dynasty leagues.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien shows raw power

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 11:07:40 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien hit his fourth home run of the spring Tuesday, March 22, and it left his bat at 119.5 mph and projected to travel 461.6 feet. It was the hardest-hit homer of the Statcast era. Only two tracked balls last year were hit harder in the majors, both by Miami Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton.

Fantasy Tip: If that doesn't show you the elite power skills that O'Brien has, we don't know what will. However, he's a man in position flux, as the D-backs are trying to transition him to the outfield. He's a 30-homer commodity whenever he solidifies a spot on the field with regular playing time. Stash him now in NL-only and keeper formats.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien taking advantage

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 19:34:02 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C/OF Peter O'Brien hit a pair of homers in the Cactus League game Sunday, March 13, and he has driving in 10 runs heading into spring play Monday, March 14.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien has forced his way into the outfield picture in Arizona, and he could find meaningful at-bats early in the season if he continues to scorch the ball, and both A.J. Pollock and Yasmany Tomas have trouble staying healthy.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien to mainly play OF

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 12:23:00 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien will see time behind the plate in spring training but will mostly play the outfield, according to manager Chip Hale.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien slugged 26 long balls in two minor league stops last year and saw his first taste of MLB action. He's a man without a position or an avenue to playing time in 2016, but he does boast 30-homer potential in a full-time role maybe years down the road.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien to report as catcher

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 11:15:51 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien will report to spring training next year as a catcher.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien is one of Arizona's top young talents, and he had four hits (one home run) in 10 at-bats to end the season in his major league debut. He hit .284 (139-for-490) with 26 long balls and 107 RBI at Class AAA Reno. O'Brien played strictly left field with Arizona after being called up, but he's expected to remain as a catcher, which is most useful for his fantasy value next year. He could eventually gain eligibility in the outfield or at first base. O'Brien will be a nice target in two-catcher or NL-only leagues to start.

Diamondbacks | Yasmany Tomas sitting

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 16:04:09 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas is out of the lineup Saturday, Oct. 3, with OF Peter O'Brien hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) is 3-for-5 (.600) with a home run in his brief career and is absolutely worth the flyer against Collin McHugh on FantasyScore.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien asks for position switch

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 16:29:19 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien recently told the organization that he didn't want to catch anymore after the team recalled C Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Class AAA Reno. O'Brien currently has a slash line of .333/.375/.624 with 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 47 RBI at Reno. He's made 16 starts in left field, 13 in right, 11 at catcher, five as the designated hitter and three at first base. The D-backs do not want to force him to play a position he's uncomfortable with, but the team is locked in other positions at the major league level. "We have a surplus of outfielders, so we don't really know where he is going to play," general manager Dave Stewart said.

Fantasy Tip: Ironically, O'Brien may be prolonging the timeline for his major league arrival by moving from behind the plate, as catcher is Arizona's weakest and thinnest position right now. But if he continues to rake in the minors, O'Brien may force the D-backs' hand eventually. In dynasty and keeper leagues, stashing him now is a smart idea.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien tearing it up

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 10:29:28 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien has homered in five of his last six games at Triple-A Reno, and he leads all minor leaguers with six home runs and 46 total bases.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien is one of the team's top minor league prospects. The way he's swinging the bat, he may be due for a call-up soon, especially with Tuffy Gosewisch and Jordan Pacheco not cutting it at the plate. NL-only managers need to have O'Brien on their radar now.
