Tigers | Three to compete for Detroit rotation

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 09:03:24 -0800

Detroit Tigers SPs Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Shane Greene are set to compete for the fifth starting rotation spot in spring training next year after the team signed SP Jordan Zimmermann to head their rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Norris has the most fantasy upside of this trio, but he must prove that he's 100% following a cancer scare this offseason. The lefty was involved in the trade last year that sent David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays. If Norris wins a rotation spot, he is certainly worth a late-round stab in deep mixed formats.

Tigers | Daniel Norris cancer-free

Thu, 29 Oct 2015 16:29:23 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (thyroid) announced on his Instagram account Thursday, Oct. 29, that he underwent successful surgery and is now cancer-free.

Fantasy Tip: Norris is a promising young left-handed pitcher that should have a rotation spot locked up in spring training next season for the Tigers. He's mainly useful for owners in AL-only leagues but is worth a flier in deep mixed formats, as well.

Tigers | Daniel Norris expected to make full recovery

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 16:36:19 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (thyroid), who was diagnosed with a cancerous growth on his thyroid earlier this year, is expected to make a full recovery and be with Detroit in spring training next year. The five-year relative survival rate is high for those diagnosed with thyroid cancer in its early stages, according to the American Cancer Society web site.

Fantasy Tip: Norris has a good chance of beating this since his cancer was caught in the early stages. If he recovers well from his surgery in the offseason, this young lefty with upside is a fine late-round flier in deep mixed fantasy leagues.

Tigers | Daniel Norris has cancer

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 14:25:14 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (thyroid) announced that he's dealing with thyroid cancer on his Instagram account. Norris pitched through it during the season but will now have a procedure to have the cancer in his thyroid removed. USA TODAY Sports extends its best wishes to Norris and his family.

Fantasy Tip: Norris is a promising young lefty pitcher that came to Detroit in the David Price trade this summer. He went 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in eight starts for the Tigers to close out the year. It's unknown what his prognosis will be entering the 2016 season but he could be a cheap flier in deep mixed and AL-only leagues if his surgery proves successful in the offseason.

White Sox | Adam LaRoche remains out Tuesday

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 13:15:10 -0700

Chicago White Sox OF Adam LaRoche (knee) is still out Tuesday, Sept. 22, against the Detroit Tigers. OF Trayce Thompson is hitting third against Tigers SP Daniel Norris.

Fantasy Tip: It appears White Sox manager Robin Ventura is taking a look at his younger starters, so even when LaRoche ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is healthy there may not be much room for him. The best thing to do is cut him loose. Thompson ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) doesn't carry much FantasyScore value with a .222 average in the past week.

White Sox | Mike Olt not starting Tuesday

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 12:11:27 -0700

Chicago White Sox 3B Mike Olt is out of the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 22, against the Detroit Tigers. 3B Tyler Saladino is batting ninth against Tigers SP Daniel Norris.

Fantasy Tip: Olt ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) is hitting .204 in September and only .200 against lefty pitching. Saladino ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) isn't much better with a .216 average against the left, but he has some success with extra-base hits so he may be worth a low-cost flier.

Tigers | Daniel Norris to start Wednesday

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 13:42:37 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (oblique) will make the start against the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, Sept. 16, but he'll only be able to go around 50 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Coming off injury and with an expected short leash, Norris ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) should be avoided in all fantasy formats tomorrow night.

Tigers | Daniel Norris, Anibal Sanchez working to return

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 15:57:31 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (oblique) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Sept. 8, and looked good, according to manager Brad Ausmus. SP Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Sept. 9, Ausmus said. Norris will move to a simulated game this weekend, and Sanchez will join Norris if his bullpen session goes well tomorrow.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if either Norris ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) or Sanchez ($5,400) will be able to return to the rotation this year. Time is running out, and neither would be a strong play in any fantasy format even if they return for a start or two.

Tigers | Daniel Norris could return this year

Sun, 06 Sep 2015 04:55:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (oblique) could still return to active duty this year, as his progress in rehab has been better than expected.

Fantasy Tip: Norris ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) may be better off packing it in for 2015, but the reality is the team may want to see what he is made of in one or two more starts to judge his readiness for 2016. He already could be a starter depending on what the Tigers do in free agency, but approach any possible starts with caution.

Tigers | Daniel Norris might be done for 2015

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:41:05 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris' (oblique) injury prognosis is worse than originally expected, and he will likely miss a minimum of four weeks, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: Randy Wolf is the temporary replacement in the rotation for Norris ($5,700, 11.4% of cap), and Wolf hasn't pitched since 2014 when he allowed a a 5.26 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP over four starts. Wolf cannot be trusted in any fantasy format, and Norris isn't worth stashing in the majority of seasonal leagues, either. At best, Norris will return for a start or two at the end of the season.
